They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

If the Sox don't sweep here I think it's time to bring up any prospect excelling in the minors who is 24 years old or above to see how their skills play at the major league level.

The only person that could reasonably apply to is Dalbec, right?

The only person that could reasonably apply to is Dalbec, right? McGrath and a few others who aren't highly ranked. I assume McGrath would come up and get crushed but what have they got to lose ? And why not Chatham ? Definitely Dalbec. If his skills play at MLB level for thirty plus games it would be interesting.

Everyone needs a 40 man spot that isn't on it, so they're aren't going to do that. What they have to lose is 40 man spots, and players that they might like when there's not enough 40 man spots this winter. To bring up McGrath, they'd have to DFA someone else and then DFA McGrath at the end of the season. That's silly. They don't even think enough of McGrath to promote him to AAA.

With McGrath, there's nothing to lose except baseball games, but in general they don't just call up guys because they've given up trying to win but calling up players they don't think are good. It'd be fun if they called him up, for sure, but if they don't think he's good, running him out there to put up like a 12.00 ERA and face the comments-section meatheads might not be the best idea. Don't need the Tony Mazz's of the world being all "look, another example of how the Red Sox don't develop pitching" at the kid.
The downside to calling up Dalbec and/or Chatham is that they aren't ready and get overmatched and develop bad habits based on that. Or a specific flaw gets exposed that hurts their value as a potential trade chip. Less worried about that with Dalbec, though letting him put up inflated numbers with the juiced ball against Triple-A pitchers while working through any potential adjustments has some value as well. In September I might bring Dalbec up since the alternative will be just ending his season. Chatham isn't MLB ready and "see how their skills play at the major league level" for a player who is talented but whose development isn't there yet is self-defeating.

August 12 and Sox are right in the thick of it. Mets aren't the only team that's going to play meaningful baseball in September

Can see some of the points made, then bringing up a guy and creating a roster spot for owings rather than calling up a solid player in either hernadez/Lin made no sense who were already on the 40 man and Lin is capable of playing 1 OF position. The constant up and down of retreads Weber/Josh Smith and Poyner, all on the 40 man has been a train wreck trifecta all season. None fit into any long term plans. Why not give more growing pains innings towards Shawaryn and Lakins if just throwing guys out there is what they are going to do on occasion. Last season many moves made sense, this year so many have been questionable organizational wide.

Cashner to the bullpen before September is just plain stupid. Just treat him like a freaking opener and use a short leash. They have zero better options.
