Congrats to Chatham. To be honest, I’ve always considered him trade bait because I questioned if he has a ceiling, but those high floor guys are very important too. Congrats CJ. He’s been very consistent and solid in the minors People expect more power from him because of his size. When I saw him on TV this Spring, I liked his bat to ball...looked like a short, quick stroke.

There goes number 8 for Pedro Castellanos. Power keeps coming.

He's also stolen 10 bases this year after only 3 in his career previously. Maybe he's worked himself into being an athlete.

8 home runs in his first 1142 at bats, 7 in last 53.

With power (and it seems like the recent run in Salem, of all places, is nothing to sniff at), how does that change his value at a prospect? I know it’s first base, but still

I know it’s first base, but still It would change his value a lot. He has really good contact skills and is good defensively. It's been mentioned a lot, but for years he's unloaded bombs in BP then just punch at everything in games. If he can keep showing it in games then he is very interesting.

Still isn’t walking though. A lot will have to go his way for a lot longer than 53 AB before I get too excited.

Somethings changed for him
Love to see it. Nothing quite as fun as watching power potential turning into the real thing

Domino effect of Chatham (and Lopez) being promoted? As of right now, the roster and transaction log don’t show it but there needs to be a couple moves. Will be by game time. Portland has 6 guys on the IL that could theoretically be activated but maybe Fitzgerald comes up. In addition to Lovullo up, they activated Downs. With power (and it seems like the recent run in Salem, of all places, is nothing to sniff at), how does that change his value at a prospect? If he suddenly develops average power without any hit tool loss, he jumps like 15 spots in the rankings from where he is now, no question. Plus power to match his plus raw with no drop in the hit tool and he's a top 20 guy again. Still isn’t walking though. A lot will have to go his way for a lot longer than 53 AB before I get too excited. I think you're underestimating how hard it is to hit HR in the Carolina League. I checked and none of his recent run have been in Frederick, which is by far the easiest park in the league to go deep in. Not saying we must assume that he has suddenly developed plus in-game power, but this is a bit different than your typical SSS anomaly given the sudden and abrupt change in a clear measurable (in other words, it's not BABIP luck) backed up by other data we know (he's always had plus raw power in BP that astonishingly and uniquely turned into like 20 or 30 power in-game).

Duran came out of the game in the 7th after a caught stealing the AB before.

Still isn’t walking though. A lot will have to go his way for a lot longer than 53 AB before I get too excited. I'm more concerned about strikeout-to-walk numbers than pure walk totals. Castellanos strikes out less than 15% of the time, and has K'd only eight times looking all season. A little more selectivity might help his power play up a little better, but those contact numbers plus moderate power would help keep his OBP playable. I could see a path where he's like a .290/.330/.450 type. Like a right-handed Eric Hosmer without the hype machine. Also, and it's weird because it feels like he's been on the cusp of a breakout for years, but Castellanos still is only 21.

He's a bit thin looking relative to his height. I'm guessing he'll be bulking up a bit as he matures. The times I've seen him, his stretches and dirt digs have been impressive. Anything he might lose in range is going to more than compensated for by helping the other infielders. Of the serious first base prospects, he's probably the best total defensive package currently.

OFF Topic but does anyone remember the name of a lower level pitching prospect from about ten years ago that always tried to make goofy headshot pictures ? He also did blogs where he had great interviews with other prospects.
Just curious where he ended up, my guess stand up comedian someplace. He made Spaceman seem down to earth.

Where do you see that? His SP player profile has him at 6 feet. MLB draft tracker had/has him listed as 6'6, I saw that when he was drafted and was surprised, but did some double checking to find out he is indeed only 6ft This back-and-forth was funny in the context that I was just alerted to the fact that Oneil Cruz actually is 6'6".
