Interesting to look at who pitched...
Chacin, Taylor, Walden, Cashner, Weber, Hernandez, Poyner. 7 pitchers - none of them on the opening day 25 roster!
Nice debut by Chacin.

In all honesty, I love the pickup on J.C. He is a solid pitcher and will be in our rotation next year. I have to give DD some credit on that one.

Why will Chacin be in our rotation next year? He's a free agent. Maybe if he takes a bullpen role for $1 million or a minor league deal.

Team-17 is unstoppable. As long as Cora goes to them every game. Poyner is a weapon.
The nabobs of negativity have been banned from the clubhouse

What a job by Cora.
You want to try to give Workman and Barnes the night off, and limit the four other good relievers to an inning each.
That means you need five innings to fill in, and you have 10 September callups to choose from (8 literal and 2 figurative, in that they were only on the roster before 9/1 because of injuries).
You pick three guys, all literal callups, and they end up working the 1st and 2nd, the 6th and 7th, and the 9th.
And they hold the second highest scoring lineup in baseball to 5 1 0 0 1 7.
And once again the game happens to play out without blowing up the winning pitcher rule. Imagine that the Sox had scored in the first or second. The win goes to the most effective reliever, who was clearly ... Chacin.
They have to invent two new stat columns for pitchers: GO (games opened) and one for the "bulk" guy. Change the winning pitcher rule to say that in a game with an opener, the 5-inning rule doesn't apply. And I'd change it to 4 IP as well. When 9 was the hope, 5 was enough for a win, so that now the 7 is the hope, 4 is enough.

This game gives me hope for the rest of September. Clearly, Porcello is going to be on the shortest leash imaginable as well. 17 relief pitchers is so many.

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo ·
Jhoulys Chacin dropped a Josh Hader comp on Darwinzon Hernandez.
Pete Abraham @peteabe · 34m Jhoulys Chacin said new teammate Darwinzon Hernandez reminds him of former Brewers teammate Josh Hader in how his high fastball moves.
High praise.

Speaking of adapting pitcher stats to new usage patterns... There are currently 27 pitchers in the entire AL who have thrown the "qualifying" number of innings. Four teams don't have a single qualifying pitcher. They might want to change those criteria.

The Yankees will be exposed so easily in the postseason. I'm still holding out the 3.4% odds or whatever.. Honestly, when you look at the Yankees lineup, and then you look at the Astros lineup... And you look at the Yankees rotation, and then you look at the Astros rotation... I mean, how would the Yankees have a prayer in that series? Then again, you look at the Yankees lineup and rotation and you wonder how the hell they're tied with the Astros for the best record in the AL.

I gotta give Moreland some love. He was never picked up to be more than a piece, but he’s done all we could expect of him and often more. He’s a quality ballplayer, and I appreciate guys like him. Can’t win without a few solid non-stars.

Then again, you look at the Yankees lineup and rotation and you wonder how the hell they're tied with the Astros for the best record in the AL. As of a few days ago they were second in MLB with +10.1 situational wins. The Astros were 29th with -2.8. So that's 13 wins of "clutch" or "karma."
In a study I did for the Sox, that number had less than zero predictive power in the post-season. The 2004 Red Sox were below average, for instance.
As I type the A's are down to their last out trailing the Tigers 5-4 in the 11th.

And they lost!
They A's brought in their first September callup of the game and he gave up the winning run in his only inning. Why can't we get guys like that?

The Sox gain a game against Cleveland and a half a game on Oakland. The Sox have been hovering around the same spot in the wild card standings for 1-2 weeks now.

The nabobs of negativity have been banned from the clubhouse I like the alliteration and historical significance, but could we add "nattering" to nabobs of negativism? Poyner had a good inning but I don't believe that he is more than AAAA based on his results.

A "bad year" for Mookie is 4th in the AL in WAR (looking at ESPN list). There is Trout, then Mookie in a cluster of 3 - Bergman and Chapman a bit ahead. Amazing.
