Congrats to Hazen getting a little security with the extension. Seems he’s in a good spot. He’s so good at his job he’s trying to rebuild but he keeps getting good players who end up contributing immediately

Lots of info on Raquel Ferreira with a lot of Kennedy quotes like: The same trust that allowed Ferreira to help convince Bogaerts to remain in Boston as part of the Red Sox’ future extends to homegrown players such as Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Matt Barnes, and Christian Vazquez, who have known Ferreira since their first days in pro ball. Those relationships are precisely why she’s been asked to help stabilize the organization — along with longtime colleagues O’Halloran, Scott, and Romero — during a time of change.
“It was a natural fit,” said Kennedy.
“We wanted to make sure that during the transition, the leadership of the department was handling all baseball operations matters and nothing fell through the cracks. We tried as much as possible to be conducting business as usual. Raquel has been here the longest. She has the deepest relationships throughout the entire organization of anyone.
“She, simply put, is a leader. People look to her for input and direction and guidance. It was a complete and total no-brainer.” www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2019/09/13/speier/OZuVifXmiltozM89RxkbKL/story.htmlShe's no token. Honestly. I wouldn’t mind giving her the title. She has earned it. And if it helps us lock up Mookie like it did Bogaerts that’s a bonus.

That was a great article. I tell you Speier has the pulse of the Sox. I really trust him.

Sure, you always want to dump the guy who drafted Mike Trout.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions about what the latter tweet means. That department has been doing a good job.

TLR is staying in Boston
@jonheyman The Red Sox have asked Tony La Russa to remain with the club. The Hall of Fame manager came to Boston to work as VP/special assistant to Dave Dombrowski, who worked w/La Russa w/White Sox decades earlier. But remaining brass prefers TLR stay, and there have been talks to that end

He's pretty highly regarded throughout the industry so it doesn't surprise me. His function is probably input. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_La_Russa

It does me. I didn't expect it. Maybe the next GM won't want it? It tells me ownership likes him, for exactly what reason IDK? I say that conceding he has respect throughout MLB.

Maybe he'll represent the ownership. I doubt if the next boss will have dd's autonomy.

LaRussa ? Why ? That seems weird. Dombrowsk brought him in, didn't he? Never been a fan of his. Are we sure he wasn't conferred with on DD's status, and if so, isn't it a little creepy that he is the last Man standing
Forget this guy....if your the new GM, would you want this guy having ownerships ear.

When he came in they talked about how he'd be an advisor/mentor to Cora and help develop the minor league coaches. Not sure if that's how it went down, but in that role, as Cora said at the time, it's Tony La Russa - why wouldn't you want him around? It's not like he's some dimwit lacky Dombrowski brought in from the street.

That's sort of a weak endorsement (ie he doesn't actually say why you would want TLR around), and while I doubt Cora meant to imply anything, I find it interesting that he posed a question... ...which is not THAT HARD to answer, really.

All old guys have a ton of wisdom to pass down that trumps any amount of empirical evidence

Eddie Bane is a very likable, humble person. He tutored my son and my nephew in pitching fundamentals when they were in middle school. He brought his son, Jamie with him. Jamie pitched with both arms. It was quite a thing to watch. Good luck to a good guy.

I admit I know very little about this, but does anybody else find it worrisome that a guy with Eddie Bane's credentials is leaving the organization? Should this be concerning? Wouldn't you want an Eddie Bane in your organization instead of leaving it?

I'm not really worried about losing Bane. He was the scout who found Mike Trout, i give him all the credit for that. However that was part of his credentials when they hired him 7 years ago, I don't think we have heard of anybody notably attributed to him here in the last 7 years

Was it really a huge reach to draft Mike Trout 25th overall? Bane's claim to fame is that the 24 teams drafting before the Angels blew it. Here's his scouting report from the MLB Scouting Bureau a few months before he was drafted: www.mlb.com/cut4/unreleased-scouting-reports-on-harper-and-trout/c-128573356One scout called him an absolute clone of Craig Biggio. And he went 25th??!! I'm not sure if they threw 7s and 8s around like candy back then or what, but that screams 1st overall pick every single year before or since.

Agreed that IMO it’s more impressive to find Mookie or Pujols at their draft position than having a first rounder turn out great. But regardless he’s had a successful career and seems like a good guy, so I’m sure he’ll land on his feet in a new job soon should he want to.

ESPN put out a pretty comprehensive piece about The Angels drafting Mike Trout. The impression I got was that Bane worked hard and was willing to stick his neck out and Trout was pushed up to #2 on the Angel's draft board. There wasn't a lot of information on Trout overall but Bane had more information than his compatriots due to seeing more of him. He also noted not to give Trout over slot because he was sure to sign.

The more and more I think about the GM search, the more and more I just think to myself that the Sox should have extended Mike Hazen and given him more money (just like AZ just did with him).
He really would have been the best successor to Dombrowski. I don't know if any of this was possible, but that's my 2 cents.
Now I'm thinking that Tim Naehring might be the best hire for this job, from the outside looking in.

It's a really fantastic article, and Bane comes off well, but signing Trout was the personal crusade of Greg Morhardt. Someone should make a movie: Morhardt works for the Red Sox, at least of the publication of this article. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26864123/draft-heist-century-how-mike-trout-fell-angelsOk, one more detail I cannot get over: People missed on Trout because they couldn't believe the magnitude of what was staring them in the face.
