This reminds me of the 20 inning game I went to between the Dodgers and the Phillies. I think it was 1992. I left in the 19th inning because I had to go to work 4 hours later. Funny thing is that I got the tickets from someone at work.

I mean if you're going to let Trevor Kelley pitch against LHB, you may as well just forfeit the game.

This game represents eveything that's wrong with baseball today. Expanded rosters. Pace of play. Bad quality baseball with not a lot of contact. Time of game.

That game was failing to be a microcosm of the season, as only Leon's Fenway single was crap luck frosting on the clutch ineptitude cake.
Well, we fixed that. The only two balls in the game with an xBA of .700 or over that were outs were the last two.
Through 6 innings, both teams were 3/5 on balls hit 98+. After that, they were 2/3, game winning SF, and we were 2/6.
We finished 4/20, 3 BB (1 IBB), no XBH from the 7th on with the tying or go-ahead run on base.

Very different batting stances. Grandpa Carl's bat looked 10 times bigger too.

Very different batting stances. Grandpa Carl's bat looked 10 times bigger too. Yaz's stance the last few years was not a thing of beauty. In years gone by players were much more diverse or idiosyncratic in their stances and swings. It's like golf was long ago. Miller Barber, Doug Sanders, Arnie are some examples. The more instruction and analysis there is, the greater the standardization.

Very different batting stances. Grandpa Carl's bat looked 10 times bigger too. I'm trying to remember, but I believe there was a sweep tag play in 1975 or thereabouts where Yaz's shoulder got messed up. I think he used to hold to bat really high to generate power, but his arms wound up being lower in his stance and he'd have to raise them up as the pitch was being thrown or something like that. He had too much pain in his shoulder to keep them raised, and then after slumping early in 1976, he went back to raising his arms high again and I think the 5 HR in 2 days explosion resulted and he kept it that way. It was a blast watching Mike Yaz play. He really smashed the hell out of that ground rule double he hit in the 14th inning. He messed up his ankle on the swing or shortly thereafter. I thought for an instant, Oh No, he's injured and Carl Yaz won't be able to see him nor will I. But as a true Yastrzemski, he gutted it out and made it to 2b. I mean, he really tied into two pitches yesterday with that HR and deep ground rule double. As for the Red Sox, well that was a typical 2019 game. I'd call it aggravating, but at this point who really cares? It's just another one of those winnable games where they couldn't get the big hit when they really needed one. They did get the clutch walk from the reliever who couldn't find home plate with a road map but they couldn't win it. They dragged it out needlessly and whoever remained went home feeling empty - I don't mean specifically this game given that the game meant nothing and seeing Yaz play was a huge treat, but if the game had mattered, that would have been the feeling as it was for most of the year. The home record is mind boggling. How do you actually turn Fenway Park into a home field disadvantage??!! I guess you could look at this way. 2019 was so messed up even Yastrzemskis are whacking the Red Sox around (not that I minded that!! I hope he has a HR today for his grandpa and I hope he has a HR tomorrow for me!).

Champs, very 2019 nailed it. 14 hits, 6 runs do not usually describe a loss. 14 hits despite some alot of bad luck and good defense by the Giants. Strong defense from the Sox Including legit highlight reel plays from half the position players (Xander, JBJ, Marco, Brockstar.) Added to Mookie’s infected foot were in-game injuries to JDM and Sam Travis.
And the crux of 2019: a SP tradition of digging early holes, in this case giving up 5R in 4IP; and a remarkable Pen in which the first SEVEN RP’s gave up 1H and zero runs. At Fenway. With TWO stars named Yaz checking out LF together.
