What the heck is Cora thinking? i mean, he'd already used most of his best pitchers to get to this point. But Smith does feel like a tank move Hey, it could be worse. They could have signed Kimbrel for mucho millions and brought HIM in to close it out.

They could have signed Kimbrel for mucho millions and brought HIM in to close it out. As I said in another comment, I don't think Kimbrel would have been as bad had the Sox re-signed him and given him the proper spring training. He had none of that this season and I think that's part of the effect of what's happening with him, so they gave his money to Nate Eovaldi (and then some) and got about the same result - and again a lack of spring training with Eovaldi as well.

Maybe Spring Training would have helped him. Or maybe, this is just a continuation of just how awful he was down the stretch and in the playoffs last season. Letting him and Kelly walk were the best non-moves DDo made.

Maybe Spring Training would have helped him. Or maybe, this is just a continuation of just how awful he was down the stretch and in the playoffs last season. Letting him and Kelly walk were the best non-moves DDo made. Yeah, I wasn't very specific when I said Kimbrel wouldn't have been as bad. I mean, I think with spring training, he wouldn't have been as bad as he is now with the Cubs. That doesn't mean he would have been good this year with the Red Sox or worth spending the money on, etc. That said, I'm not of the mind that his career is necessarily over for two reasons. 1) The image of Kimbrel was a guy who the Sox won the post-season despite him. The fact of the matter is that he gave up runs in Game 1 ALDS, Game 4 ALDS, Game 2 ALCS, and Game 4 ALCS - 4 consecutive appearances, and he didn't pitch well in Game 4 of the World Series. Game 1 ALDS of the ALDS he got 4 outs, 3 via Ks, and gave up a Judge solo HR - he wasn't that bad that game, but he did make a mistake. Game 4 ALDS he was brutal. He almost cost the Sox the game and possibly the series. Game 2 ALCS he was getting hit hard. His control was fine, but he was lucky a wind knocked down Bregman's drive. Game 4 ALCS he was horrendous. Almost lost the game and turned the series into Houston's favor (with momentum). Game 4 World Series. After the "tipping" was corrected he had his one bad outing in garbage time, giving up a 2-run HR and then another hit afterwards. Dever made a great play to help him out. He pitched fine in Game 5 ALCS, but he did give up a 4 pitch walk. He had clean well pitched innings in the first two games of the World Series and did the job in Game 3 of the World Series when the Sox were in danger of losing in the last of the 9th. That was his post-season. Maybe the tipping mattered, maybe it was an excuse. He didn't pitch as well down the stretch but overall he pitched well during the regular season, which is a larger body of work than the end of the season. 2) It's harder to judge pitchers this season. Yes you can compare them among themselves and see who was better, but I think this ridiculous HR ball they're using is really skewing pitching numbers all over the place. If you let the air out of all these rabbit ball home runs, you wonder how effective the pitchers would be. It seems to me that hitters are taking the shortcut to scoring runs - waiting on the HR ball. If you take the air out of the ball, then hitters might actually have to resort to other ways of scoring runs, like actually getting basehits, and/or stealing bases, moving runners over, etc. Hitting gap to gap. Actual baseball, rather than home run derby. If pitchers who are more susceptible to the HR ball have that lessened as a threat, but are still really hard to get basehits off of, then perhaps those pitchers' would be better salvaged if the league used real baseballs, rather than the rabbit balls they're using now. And if that's the case and the ball is more prone to staying in the park, maybe an extreme power pitcher like Kimbrel has a better shot at rebounding more than most other pitchers.

Big game today. E-Rod goes for #19 tomorrow.
All in all, the last week of the season is a letdown.
Nats & Brewers Tues night. 🌙

Crisis averted.
I can't remember one guy managing to hold on as the Red Sox #5/6 right-handed reliever for so long. It's been a very strange combination of well-timed injuries by others and pitching well in stretches when the roster tightens up. His bWAR by season since 2015: 0.4, 0.4, 0.4, 0.5(!), 0.4.

Good win last night. Gaurantees a .500 season, something a lot of people thought wasn't possible at the start of the season.

Based on Instagram, I am reasonably sure that 10% of tonight's attendance at the Trop is made up of Red Sox minor leaguers. They must have sent a bus.

Corkys is a rare find. You have to really look hard to find somebody so awful.

There's a greater chance of hitting big on the lotto than Corky's getting a hit.

Take out a professional hitter and bring in a guesser. Dumb.

Take out a professional hitter and bring in a guesser. Dumb. you don't want Moreland against a lefty, and anyway a guesser should be fine against this Poche guy. Pretty much all he does is throw fastballs, not sure why he was so confusing to Xander and Vazquez.

I always thought that Mookie's arm was all about quickness in getting it off and accuracy, but that looks like Dewey right there.

If that ball bounced once, it wouldn't have been an out because it would have slowed down a little. That's just a perfect, perfect throw.

Let's add a throwing contest to the MLB All-Star game festivities...length, speed, accuracy.
