My sense is that he's a bit of an 'out-of-nowhere' guy to a degree. Remember he basically didn't pitch for a year....began pitching again sometime in 2019, experienced a velo bump and had a bit of a coming out party at the Asian Baseball Championship. Seems like we swooped in at the right time, and I wonder if playing alongside Tsu-Wei Lin at the ABC helped to facilitate things.

My thoughts from the above outing:
4FB: 93-94, T96. Has life. Commands to glove side. Able to elevate consistently with 2 strikes. 2FB: 87-90 with run/sink. Likes to throw for a first pitch strike. SL: 82-83. Commands consistently to glove side. Short, loopy break. Lots of swings and misses. CH: 78. Appears to have some fade. Only threw once. CU: 76-80. Loopy 11-5 break. Clear 4th pitch. Leaves up in zone.

CU: 76-80. Loopy 11-5 break. Clear 4th pitch. Leaves up in zone. I was seeing those as just being worse sliders, but yeah--you might be right about them being (not good) curveballs. That would be a positive, because it takes away my "his slider is great when it works but half of them are meatballs" concern.

Where would he rank in the Red Sox system?

Where would he rank in the Red Sox system? Need to hear more here. Joan Martinez can dial up 96-97. It's about what you do with it and what else you have. We’ll see. Almost certainly top 40 though, at least.

I guess the next question is, is he an XST guy who goes to Lowell? What’s the chance that he gets an age-but-prob-not-experience-appropriate start in Greenville?
I’m really excited about this signing. The FB/SL both look plus to me. There’s certainly room for projection/growth given his age and the time off (his coach was a class act for that). And any chance at all he continues as a 2-way?

I could see him being an XST-to-Greenville guy. They're not going to want him throwing too many innings and they'll probably want to work with him at the complexes. On the other hand, he'll be the same age as the college pitchers they'll be drafting and sending to Lowell in June.

Is he a starter or a reliever?

Is he a starter or a reliever? He was a reliever in the most recent tournament with Tzu-Wei.

I don't think that's a question that has to be answered right away. While he doesn't have the preferred pitcher's build, the staff will probably want to see how his stuff holds up over multiple innings. There's a likelihood that he moves to the pen at some point, but that's not a given.

One of the graphic overlays has him at 181 cm and 68kg at age 20, which I guess is 5’11 and 150 lbs according to my google math. Given his size and previous arm troubles I’m thinking he’s likely a bullpen arm...maybe piggyback starter for the short term in Greenville to get multiple innings and leave the door open to start while getting some innings Just an update on this: several sources (including the mlb.com list) now have him at 6’0” and 185 lbs. Not ideal starter material, but 185 lbs is an improvement. FWIW, the mlb.com scouting report says: “Though Liu is on the small side for a pitcher, Boston thinks he can hold up as a starter.”

I asked Kiley a question regarding Liu in his Fangraphs chat today. Can anyone translate the second part of his answer for me?
Jason 12:27 Any insights regarding Red Sox international signing Chih-Jung Liu from Taiwan? He seems like a bit of a pop-up guy having taken time off from pitching, then reemerging this year with newfound velo and a coming out performance at the Asian Baseball Championship (i.e., touching upper 90s with FB, dominant in relief, MVP honors). I know he’s older than most J2 prospects, but had that performance been a year earlier, are we looking at a guy who may have ranked favorably on the board for the 2019 J2 class?
Kiley McDaniel 12:28 Writing up that blurb today to be on the site likely tomorrow. He's in a good spot on that list and when we ranked the J2 class even the clubs that signed him were lower than before that tournament.

Hm. Maybe sub "liked" for "signed?"

I'm really excited about this guy. Soxprospects has him at 24, MLB.com at 16 and Fangraphs at 12.

Reality pushing in on baseball. Taiwan has been very careful about the virus, but it's also host to a very large population of visitors from mainland China.

Here in CT this is the first day where even the "who cares" crowd is talking about the coronavirus a lot. This could drag out throughout the summer.
