Only caught the end of Song's outing but loved that he caught the hitter looking with a damn curve for the third out.
If he gets out of military service, he's going to be a mega steal.

His command definitely isn't, and I'm not sure I agree on the stuff point either (secondaries show great promise, but I didn't see a current MLB 60 or anything).
As ballsy as the curve was, it probably gets hit 400 feet in the majors. MLB hitter isn't letting a belt high curve by him.

His slider is plus but not likely 60. I didn't see a change today but he threw one the other day that also looked plus. The curve was a lollipop but it definitely froze the batter after two straight fastballs. That's a 20 MPH difference.

For context, he was clearly more dominant than Neftali Feliz who also hit 97. I'm guessing that as a starter, he will throw a different mix than a one inning reliever.

Agreed that airing it out for one inning might change things. Edit: fwiw, I just queued up his inning to check it out during a call (~3:12 mark on the video), and his second pitch is a fastball he leaves up that gets crushed for a double. That's exactly what I'm referring to. Edit2: First K was on a pretty sick curve. Wow. OK then. (Worth noting that he missed location, but in the zone, a couple times during that AB as well, I think both inside when catcher was set up outside. Got away with both but again, command.)

OK, finished the inning. All 3 strikeouts were on curves, but the second and third were maybe 40, 45 curves. First was at least a 55. Fastball was crisp. Command maybe 45? I saw a lot of pitches that get hit hard by better hitters. Like Ray, I didn't notice any changeups either, nor sliders (sound right, Ray?). Not quite sure why he's working FB/curve, but it worked. Maybe a feel thing?

Or maybe a stress thing. The slider may be tougher on the arm than the curve. He's pitched a bit this year.

I get your point and in many ways hope he's able to delay his service as well to play ball, then it doesn't hurt any young man to join the service from a maturity standpoint, even if it's just a couple of years which think it may be in Song's case here. The military can do wonders for young kids regimen wise, even if only do 1 hitch as I did.

Maybe a feel thing? I didn't rewatch the inning and didn't track pitch by pitch, i just watched it and made note of the radars (which aren't given on every pitch). I was thinking the double came off a slider that was high but you are likely right. I'd give his command a higher grade, he works up in the zone and I have no issues with that given his velocity. If you know you are only going to pitch one inning, you aren't likely going to try to establish all your pitches which is why I think he'll be a far different pitcher as a starter. We also have no way to know if he holds velocity over a longer period. For me, I see someone who will develop into a multiple plus pitch pitcher but his current level of stuff would make him a bottom of the order starter. That though is a long way away because he'll need to get into the every 5 days routine as well as the innings he'll need to build up to.

It appears that the first game of the super round against South Korea will happen at about 5AM EST (19:00 JST, I'll let you guys do the math, I don't know if you are on daylight savings time now or not, 6PM for me). Cody Ponce gets the start for the USA.

Hmmm not sure if it's just the Philippines but every time I click on the live stream icon, I get the Japan/Australia game which is going on at the same time. BOX SCORE: USA down 3-0 3rd inning. A S. Korean with a 3 run HR in the first. EDIT: Found it: www.facebook.com/usabaseball/videos/439013463665587/

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 · 25m if Mexico beats Australia tonight it will clinch an Olympic bid if US loses to Japan tomorrow. US and Mexico each have 3 games left. Mexico's magic number to win the bid is two. US would then have to go to last-chance Olympic qualifier in Arizona in March.

Houck scratched from game 2 late. Hopefully nothing bad.
Chatham drives in the game's first run with a double.

Houck scratched from game 2 late. Hopefully nothing bad. Chatham drives in the game's first run with a double. Chatham scored the second run on the double. Driven in by Dalbec's double. 2-0 after 3. Cronenworth drove in the first run not Chatham.

No Song. Announcer said tomorrow will be a bullpen night so I'm guessing something is not right with Houck.

USA v. Australia is going on right now. Didn't get to see it, but Houck let up two runs in the first on two walks, a double, and a single. His slider was looking pretty nasty in the second.
