Just for anyone who's on the fence about reading this, it's a hard read in terms of some of the content, but this isn't a take-your-medicine deal, it's fascinating and compelling. Regarding the content, if medical horror stories really aren't your thing, maybe skip it, but I'm pretty sensitive to that stuff myself and I didn't have too much of a problem with it.

The hard read comment is me putting myself in his shoes and internalizing what he went thru, probably not the healthiest thing to do but I am guilty of it often. Thank you for clarifying with your thoughts. It is certainly fascinating and compelling.
I thought that being able to hide it from the Sox was interesting, if that is actually true.

As I mentioned in the other thread, this is a good example of how doctors are not gods who never make mistakes, the way a lot of people revere them. These stories are far too common and rarely exposed like this. I look at even going to the doctor at all as a last resort.
As a personal example, my mom's doctor f'ed up a hip replacement and she had to get it re-done, leading to a 3rd huge dose of anesthesia in less than a year (two hips and a re-do of the 2nd), which has practically ruined her life at this point. She has things wrong with her that no one has ever heard of. She has to get her throat stretched out periodically so she doesn't get things stuck in her throat. She had to get all of her eyelashes removed because they were growing into her eyes and scratching her corneas. She never had shingles before until she went to get a shingles shot and got them. Too much anesthesia in too short of a time is a big risk. Before her hip surgeries, she hadn't gone to a doctor for years because she didn't have any of these issues. Now that's all she does. And she actually still believes they are gods who are never wrong. She takes anything they tell her to take and will continue to do so until they kill her. Here's a pill to counter the side effects of that 12th pill you need. She just says "OK, whatever you say. You're the doctor."
Instead of trying to fix her inflammation, they just keep giving her pills to cover the source of her inflammation.
And the cherry on top is that she adamantly refused to get a lawyer and seek legal recourse. I spent a long time trying to convince her to do it.

As I read this I thought it was about addiction for most of the article, then of course it changes gears and has a whole new level of anguish. Yes it is about the medical malpractice but it is also a look at how people become addicted and how easily that happens. He talks about finding a Dr that will just give him as many pills as he wants as if it is an after thought, that bothers me. SOOO many people are complicit in this epidemic that has ruined so many lives and communities in this country. And I am talking about Dr's, politicians, the Pharma company executives, not people we expect criminal behavior from. They are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people. That is a big part of this story also and nobody has mentioned that.

I would love to see a "Spotlight" style investigative reporting series done on this. Dr. Wood and the Chief Surgeon at MGH would be great places to start. About all, the quack could say is "Don't worry about it, I'm insured."
Just remember, half the doctors in the world are below average doctors.

There is no such thing as reporting anymore when it comes to the medical/pharmaceutical industry. It's a cartel. They spend at least half of the advertising money spent on news shows. So nothing will ever be reported on that they don't approve of. They have editorial control.

Spotlight was initiated by the Globe, not the "news" networks.
