"...illegal sign-stealing investigation..." Says who, the NYPost? I thought that's what the investigation was for, to determine if there were illegalities. That rag still barely rises above fishwrap.

Well they can wait until after the draft.

Good excuse after all the time they have postponed it. Manfred is doing a lousy job as commissioner IMNSHO.

What kind of garbage is this? Did the people writing the report all catch Coronavirus?

What kind of garbage is this? Did the people writing the report all catch Coronavirus? The constant push back is giving me hope that they've found nothing.

Well they can wait until after the draft. I'd rather they not. I'd rather have their draft from 2021 intact rather than 2020.

I need a job where "the work is done, I just haven't had time to write it yet" is an acceptable excuse even when everything else at my job has been cancelled for a month.

he really is the most clueless leader in terms of how he messages. why not just say something like "the coronavirus is taking all of our attention at this time". He has no sense of how to message the moment.

I hope John Henry leaks something via Boston Globe. It's possible he put pressure on Manfred to give him an answer since the investigation is completed.

As someone who's obsessed with the RS holding onto 2020 draft pick no. 17, I find Steve Pearce's comments a bit concerning. He spoke with the Globe about his decision to retire and said:
“When it came out we were all kind of joking about it. We just want this to pass us. We won it fair and square. Whatever they accused us of, we were all kind of like, ‘I can’t believe this is even an issue.’"
The bolded part, in particular, doesn't read to me like an outright denial that nothing happened.
"Officer, I only took $5 from the register when the clerk wasn't looking" is different than "I did not take a dime."
If the RS did anything at all, they'll be a two-time offender and the commish might take the pick.
But maybe I'm overthinking this because I so want to see the RS re-build the farm. And also, of course, because I don't have much else to do these days.

Not the worst. Don't have the Athletic to be able to read the reasoning. Seems odd Cora got zero punishment for Boston, but they lost a 2nd round pick. I'll have to wait for the other sites to cover it.

So, the replay operator told players the sign info. The Sox did not relay it to the batter directly, but only when the guy on second and he could use the broken code and relay it the old fashioned way. From Cora not being implicated, presumably the players themselves went to Watkins to see the signs replay, and then used it when/if they got to second.

Do we know how much of a chunk out of the bonus pool it is to lose that 2nd?

I'll have to wait for the other sites to cover it. Loss of a second round pick hurts, especially in a five round draft, but I figured it would be worse (especially considering the team’s past history). I still think the players should be punished not just some staffer.

I would think this report makes it very possible that Cora returns in 2021. This is a tough punishment given the circumstances of this year's draft but the findings don't exactly make me run for an asterisk to put besides the 2018 World Championship the way it makes me do for the 2017 Astros and that isn't my Red Sox bias talking.
This isn't in the same league as the Astros. Not even close.

This easily should've been a fine if you're going in proportion with what the Astros got.

The pick got docked because the commissioners office told them to cut the crap after the Apple Watch nonsense
If it was just this incident in a vacuum I bet it would have been a fine, but it wasn’t
It kinda feels like losing 20 bucks. Sucks but I’ll get over it, things could be worse

This is fair.
We talked alot in 2018 in real time about the Red Sox approach of "selective aggressiveness" being such a huge reason for their success. So I have trouble believing that cheating, and this specific manner of cheating, were total nonfactors.

So it's using video to decode signs instead of letting players figuring it out themslves is the entire stink over?
Cora not getting any fines and further punishment is quite a surprise. Is he going to get black listed from MLB teams?
