Brice had an excellent 2019 at first glance: 3.43 ERA in 44.2 innings. 9.3 K/9, . 124 ERA+
The 4.87 FIP doesn’t look great though.

Brice has an absurdly high HR/FB the last two years. He moved more from a sinker in previous years to a four-seam in 2019 - much better swing and miss reults, even if the issue with homers wasn't really solved. Certainly seems worth the cost to see if he's a guy who is just more valuable with a less launchy baseball. Santos is a shortstop who got $100K at signing but did not hit at all in the DSL.
There are other players on the roster I might've looked at DFAing before Hernandez, but there's a lot less space there now than there was a month ago.

I'm not that upset if they lose Marco, but I bet he clears. He's not good at enough things to be more than one of the last guys on the bench and they have plenty of those types. The complete lack of walks makes it so his OBP is completely reliant on his BABIP.
I also wonder since we've heard absolutely nothing about Holt if this is an indication that he'll eventually re-sign.

Hopefully this starts a run of trades/signings and makes things more interesting.

Agree that lack of talk re: Brockstar (and MM) could mean a return. Holt is, in fact, the most versatile and valuable defender AND best hitter among the several bench options; and is the only legit team leader and fan favorite among them. In addition to all his on field goodness, he and his fam have no peer off the field. Everyone wins if he retires a Red Sox:

Not going to act like DFAing Hernandez is the end of the world, but am I missing something on Ryan Weber?

Not going to act like DFAing Hernandez is the end of the world, but am I missing something on Ryan Weber? Weber really does have very good control, and they were playing with his pitch mix last year--he was throwing fewer fastballs than ever. The stuff seems so pedestrian to me - like a classic case of a pitchability Quad-A guy who commands his fastball and decent curve but just doesn't have that third pitch to be a starter or velocity to play up as a reliever - but I feel like they see something. EDIT: And I kinda forgot the obvious here - Hernandez can be outrighted if/when he clears waivers, while Weber can elect free agency. He was outrighted by Tampa in July 2018.

Brian Johnson told me that.
Holt would seem to be a redundant part given Peraza, Arauz, and Lin.
Meanwhile, Brice had a .294 xwOBA (and .292 wOBA), which put him behind Workman, Barnes, Darwinzon, and Taylor, but ahead of Walden and Hembree. He had 7 appearances (out of 36) of 2+ innings.
I could see them adding just one more bullpen arm, after they move Price.

Pre injury/DL in July
ERA- 1.88 WHIP- 1.07 BAA- .189
Post DL
ERA- 12.79 WHIP- 2.21 BAA- .333
A tale of two seasons. Hopefully he gets healthy, if he does he could be a contributing member of the bullpen

Original injury was a forearm flexor strain. He went back on the DL with a forearm strain on the 27th and didn't pitch again, and then got DFA'd. I'm not sure what to make of the latter. But when he was healthy last year, he was an 8th-inning guy, not as good as Workman but better than Barnes.

If you're the Sox, this is exactly the type of player that you'd be willing to put a premium on, right? Just a guy who is enough of a lock to get through a lineup without giving up more than 2 runs in an emergency. Although I'm sure the Sox would love to upgrade on a guy whose probably a backup to Velazquez right now.

See him as nothing more than a RH Brian Johnson, which isn't much. Typical AAAA guy who throws upper 80's to 90mph with so called "4 pitch mix" and called up in a jam, then DFA'd when of no more use, NOT a 40 man roster spot type of guy.

Weber has better control than Johnson, a better record of durability, and a better changeup. That's not going to make him a superstar or anything. But when you're talking about the last guy on the roster? Those marginal differences can make a big difference.
Though I suppose the funny thing is that the acquisition of Brice makes it a little bit less likely that they can carry Weber, depending on pitcher injuries.
EDIT: And all of this may very well be much ado about nothing, and Weber is simply the next guy off when they need a spot. Marco Hernandez can't play shortstop and is probably a sub-.300 OBP guy. He had that nice stretch where he relieved us all from Eduardo Nunez, but I think we all might've been overrating him a tad (myself included) for simply being an improvement over arguably the worst player in baseball last year.

I think many are still living on the dream of Peak Prospect Marco, which injuries and time have killed.

Something that I just thought of - they probably have a very good idea of the interest level in Marco given that he was a free agent very recently and signed the split contract. Quite possible Hernandez's people related how much interest there was, giving Sox an idea that he'd clear.

I had to read this twice because I thought you said Hernandez relieved himself on Nunez, which if that was the case, we should make him team captain.
