Just don't see how Roenicke is a viable candidate. He's been in the same dugout as Cora for the last 2 years.

Options with at least some MLB managerial experience: - Jeff Banister
- Tim Bogar (only served as interim)
Intriguing options with little to no MLB managerial experience: - Matt Quatraro
- Sam Fuld
- Raul Ibanez
- Hensley Meulens
- Craig Breslow
I don't think the Red Sox will consider Ron Roenicke given his potential role in the cheating. I think we've all heard former players like Varitek and Pedroia (technically a current player) floating around. Any other options that seem reasonable?

For first-time types, Quatraro was the name I went to first when the Hinch penalty broke and it became clear the Red Sox were going to need a manager for awhile. I'm very much a believer in the guys who have worked their way through as coaches and minor league managers and learned game management and communication that way. Hensley Muelens is another. He got some managerial interviews but not a top job - he took the Mets bench coach gig, but he might be willing to interview (and he was Xander's manager in the WBC, so that's a bonus!)
If they're going to go the interim/temporary route and prefer someone with experience, I'd be fine with Roenicke, depending on what comes out of the investigation. If they want to (or need to) go out of the organization, Manny Acta got a lot of credit for handling a couple hopeless situations in Washington and Cleveland, but those were different in that they were bad teams rather than a highly-talented team in a precarious situation.

Someone like Varitek might make a good bench coach, depending on the manager choice, but it would be foolish to to just hand him the manager job having no experience managing.

It seems to me pretty obvious that they're going to go with someone young, very analytic and intelligent and a great communicator. That doesn't mean that they have to have a lot of experience. They'll be looking for the next Cora. If they can't find that this late, they could go the interim route.

The Roenicke thing is tough because even with an outside manager coming in it'd be great to have some level of stability with like 2 weeks till the season kicks off. But obviously his level of stink isn't known yet. I wonder if Henry asked Manfred for a sneak peek on that particular aspect.
Craig Breslow would be very interesting to me as a very thoughtful player, but probably not the time to bring him in with a team set up to wild card or more and 2 weeks before folks start showing up in Florida.

Was coming back to add this to my previous post. Tek as a bench coach (if he'd do it) would add a great level of stability. Unless he's got sign stealing stink.

Maybe they should give up a draft pick as compensation for Quatraro before MLB takes it away.
I'm not even sure if I'm kidding anymore.

Very for this The reddit/twitter crowd will weep for Varitek, but this isn’t some romantic comedy with a storybook ending. We have to make a smart move.

Varitek is a super smart guy, but is he analytically driven? Or is he more old school?

What about Gary Disarcina? I’m kind of half kidding since he is a local boy from my hometown. However he has a lot of experience coaching/managing in our minor leagues and is familiar with a lot of our young players. He is currently the 3rd base coach of the Mets.

I still have PTSD from my childhood self being saddled with so many repeat DiSarcina cards in Topps/Upper Deck/Fleer packs.

Varitek might be a good manager after a few years as a bench coach.

Varitek might be a good manager after a few years as a bench coach. Agreed. Hiring a fan favorite at the wrong time only leads to a messy split and I don’t think anyone wants to risk Tek’s relationship with the org or fan base.
