Sale, Eovaldi, Rodriguez, Perez & ?
Ryan Weber? Has that been the plan all along?

Probably an opener
I wouldn’t hate looking at McHugh for the #5 job though

Take a swing at Taijuan Walker. There’s a bunch of upside there.

I think we could sign an Aaron Sanchez type guy.

I think we could sign an Aaron Sanchez type guy. If we do we should get two of those flier types. Like Sanchez and Salazar

Its Weber. Maybe Velasquez or Brian Johnson gets another crack at it. Do not rush Graterol. If you want him to make the roster out of the pen I'm fine with that.

Both of Walker and Salazar on MLFA deals with May 1 opt outs. If one pans out, great.
Also with mild payroll flexibility could the Mets attach a guy like Matz to get rid of Lowries contract?
Also Sanchez had right shoulder capsule surgery in August. Expected recovery is 12-14 months.

Is it terrible to say at this point, I could care less and ask what difference it makes on a mediocre team with no playoff aspirations?
Their #5 guy probably isn't on the roster yet. Bloom will trade for him or pick him up at the end of spring training when he's released and he won't be overly impressive. Houck and eventually Graterol will get starts because at some point Sale and Eovaldi will experience injuries.

I would let Graterol develop his changeup in AAA and save the years of control for when he's hopefully a starter.

By my count, some remaining FAs include: Clay Buchholz, Trevor Cahill, Andrew Cashner, Marco Estrada, Matt Harvey, Jeremy Hellickson, Collin McHugh, JC Ramirez, Danny Salazar, Aaron Sanchez, Jason Vargas, and Taijuan Walker.
I do think we sign 1-2 from this bin, perhaps on minor league deals.
Sorry if this post is depressing...

Remember when Perez was marginally #5? Now he is solidly #4. I think it is fair to say #5 should be whoever comes cheapest.

McHugh is probably the best of the bunch imo
At least he has experience pitching with a short porch in left and has been relatively effective in recent years, albeit not as a starter. But there’s not a ton of risk involved in letting him be the 5. If he pitched well enough and the Sox are out of things because the other pitchers fell apart they would be able to flip him at the deadline

Right now it's an opener.
Agree with those who'd love them to take a swing at McHugh, Walker, or Salazar.
Not worried about Walker's velo. It's early February. He shouldn't be in midseason form yet.

I think you'll see 2 "featured" (2-4 inning outings) pitchers in the bullpen like two years ago with Johnson / Velaquez.

As much as I wish a pox on the Sox, I would like to see Walker. I loved his stuff before, and if he can recover even some of that, he could be a solid pickup. But still, the devil take them, all of them!!

Wouldn't Walker theoretically make some sense as an opener lottery ticket? It'd let his stuff and velo play up a little more while also reducing the risk of wearing him down over the course of a season.
