Absolutely shocking. Who'd have thunk it? Yeah, if it's going to be that kind of thing, it's really hard to see the Red Sox seriously competing. Hell, finishing .500 could be troublesome. They were already very short on starting pitching to begin with.

What a questionable contract extension and management of his health.

What a questionable contract extension and management of his health. Well the good news is that they have him until 2024 so there's plenty of time to get TJ surgery if necessary and for him to recover. Doesn't that make you feel better?

Doesn't that make you feel better?Actually it makes me feel slightly better. Overall... feeling bad. But hopefully it is just early spring soreness. The upside of him being hurt is that any notion of competing this year goes out the window and they can begin Operation: Sell Off immediately.

Let's just see what's going on before we lose our minds. He has a sore arm in Spring training, it's not the end of the world.
If you do want to go into doomsday mode though, here's a silver lining: if Sale is hurt, this team was never going anywhere, so the Betts trade is more palatable.

Least surprising injury report I've ever heard. Let's just get the TJ surgery over with.

Doesn't that make you feel better? It just seems that so often when a pitcher opts for rest over surgery, the surgery ends up coming later and now you’ve missed almost twice as much time. The management of the roster following the ‘18 WS was putrid. I think they can recover but this season is going to be a nightmare for this pitching staff and some of these guys are going to be taking a mental beating from being forced out there to fail on a regular basis.

Well if this doesn’t reinforce the decision to trade mookie instead of hold on to him “for another run” then I’m not sure what does

It's going to suck so bad when we have to trade Devers to the Dodgers in order to move this albatross of a contract.

If you do want to go into doomsday mode though, here's a silver lining: if Sale is hurt, this team was never going anywhere, so the Betts trade is more palatable. Don't think anybody is really losing their minds. I mean, are you ready to pencil in Sale for 150 - 200 quality innings this season? I think a lot of us were expecting to hear this at some point - that his elbow is sore. I mean, when haven't we heard it recently with Sale? I think it's not that hard to guess where it's going. The only thing that I felt certain of was that the talent is still there. I don't think last year was a case of "he lost it". It's definitely injury related. Your last point is well taken. It does make it a good thing that they traded Mookie away in a year where they're most likely to have also-ran status. Unfortunately with the Dodgers having 17 different viable starting pitching options, the Sox weren't able to come away with one of them. Maybe if they would have included Brandon Workman maybe they could have extracted one of those starters - somebody who can be a starter for the Sox this year and next. Am thrilled they got Downs though and have hope for Wong even though he's gotta a lot of work to do to get that BB/K ratio healthier.

If it is TJ surgery, might as well shed all salary possible and play the core you see as part of the team beyond this year and even next. Trade Moreland, Pillar, JDM, JBJ, etc and reload through youth for 2021 and beyond. Get the kids experience and see what you have. Use savings to lock up Devers, Edrod, etc

Maybe that's one guy, maybe its 3 or 4. If it's 3 or 4+ this team will still be competitive even potentially without Sale. With the signings Bloom has made, the intriguing 2nd tier young arms we already had, plus the payroll flexibility we now have to make other smart moves in-season, I'm actually optimistic this season is going to be an interesting one to follow. Sometimes its better to be the underdog, its more fun.

Use savings to lock up Devers, Edrod, etc If the Sox find themselves realistically out of the wild card race, whether Sale is fine or not, it would make sense to deal those guys although emotionally for me it's hard to see JD Martinez go, but yes. The problem is that those guys wouldn't return much in the way of value. The Chris Sale scare kind of underscores the biggest problem with the Red Sox right now - and it's not the Mookie Betts stuff - it's the issue of being able to develop viable mid-rotation (or better) starting pitching talent. The Sox have a lot of backend/probable reliever type pitchers, but very few guys that, if healthy, you project going into the rotation to plug those holes. I mean Mata and Houck are the closest and they might best work as relievers or as the bulk #5 type starter who comes in after the opener. Song and Groome right now in my opinions are the two guys in the system who could be viable mid rotation type starters but we don't know when Song will even pitch and we don't really know what to expect out of Groome at this point who has lost a lot of development time.
