But setting aside the bigger point, which you allude to, that current level isn't nearly as important as a number of other considerations, the only reason he's going to be in MLB is Rule 5. If he were still in the Yankees system he'd almost certainly be heading to AAA, if not a brief assignment to AA to prove he's healthy.
He's in MLB to pitch long relief and make occasional spot starts and isn't even the first option to do that, and there's a question of whether or not he'll be more than that in the long run. If he acquits himself well in MLB? Then yeah he might move up quickly. For now he's an interesting guy who struck out 57 hitters in 70 AA innings in 2019 and is coming off Tommy John.

I guess I just mean that one factor in “making it” is having a shot at all. Whitlock, who apparently has a low-to-mid 90s fastball and at least adequate secondaries — by a fluke of the rules — is going to get a chance many minor leaguers never get. So I am obviously not saying he is a *better* prospect in some Platonic sense than some guys... but I am saying that if I were ranking guys whose “prospects” — that is, opportunity, window for advancement — were best, at this moment he has an up-arrow and a guy like Mata has a down arrow. Platonically, Mata is the “better” prospect. But if you said put $10 on who ends with a higher career WAR between the two, it would not at all be crazy to pick Whitlock, who we *know* is at least on the cusp of the chance to produce value. (Put differently, if Whitlock is a season long mopup man and ends with a .1 bWAR, I’d say a low level guy, even a stud, has a lot of landmines between him and that .1). I don’t know if this makes sense. I don’t think we are actually disagreeing, at least for the main part.

So, Jim Callis and company at mlb.com have Taylor Trammell ranked as the #100 prospect. I am wondering how others, especially Ian and Chris, compare him to Duran and Jimenez.

MLB did a piece on their Top 30s for their farm systems and the Sox popped up in three places.
1) Sox got the 2nd highest score for the average slider grade in their top 30. The average slider in the Red Sox top 30 got a 55.8 grade.
2) Sox got the 4th (tied) highest score for the average changeup in their top 30. The average changeup in the Red Sox top 30 got a 52.1 grade.
3) Sox have the 2nd most (tied) prospects on the top 30 with an estimated ETA of 2021 or 2022. 20 of the Sox top 30 are projected to hit the majors in the next two years.

I saw that article as well. One of the errors though is they list Ryan Pepiot as a pitcher for the Red Sox with a 70 grade changeup. He's in the Dodgers' system. Not sure if that skews their data.

Presuming this takes into account Spring Training, Groome jumps ahead of Jimenez, and Lugo drops behind Seabold/Song/Murphy. Hmmm. And big jump by Bleis. That is a promising first sign of what we might see when the DSL kicks in.

I believe the only changes from their previous list this winter was to add in Hernandez at #13, move up Whitlock from #17 and add Bleis in at #22.

My mistake. I was looking at the first post on the page, but now see it is MLB pipeline.

One thing I noticed, scanning the other teams lists (specifically KC and NYM, for obvious reasons) is that they still have Winckowski at 21 on the Mets list. Not sure he would've factored into their updated Sox list anyway but seems like they have an error in their "database".
