MLB Pipeline has their own list of players for the Rule 5 Draft: Omar Estevez, 2B/SS, Dodgers Jordan Guerrero, RHP, Padres Kyle Holder, INF, Yankees Marshall Kasowski, RHP, Dodgers Brendon Little, LHP, Cubs (I initially thought he could be the compensation for Osich) Zach Pop, RHP, Orioles Buddy Reed, OF, A’s Jordan Sheffield, RHP, Dodgers Alex Speas, RHP, Rangers Zach Warren, LHP, Phillies www.mlb.com/news/rule-5-draft-names-to-watch-2020?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Lol if they wind up with Jordan Sheffield after all, that'd be pretty funny. (For those unaware, he was their 13th rounder in 2013 and given that he was the only pick in the first 19 rounds to go unsigned and the team had more than $900k unspent on the cap+5% figure, it seemed pretty clear they thought they could sign him for some figure in the high six figures and couldn't.)

Smart move by Sheffield. Enrolled at Vanderbilt, then signed for almost two million three years later.

I'm currently amazing myself by not comparing BA's list of 27 pitchers with CBS's 15, or the 12 that I listed myself after the selection deadline, or the ones that Mayo will list when he expands his Pipeline list from the current 10. I'll just look up whoever they do draft!
In the meantime, I think these numbers of open slots are correct: Tm Open Pit 1 Tex 2 Det 1 Bos 2 Bal 5 Ari 2 KC 6 Col 3 LAA 6 NYM 6 Was 6 Sea 2 Phi 2 SF 7 Mil 5 Hou 1 Mia 3 Cin 8 StL 3 Tor 0 NYY 1 ChC 5 ChW 2 Cle 4 Atl 2 Oak 5 Min 4 SD 1 TB 1 LAD 2

If the Sox are looking for a 4th outfielder and a defensive replacement for Bradley it would do well to consider Buddy Reed from the A’s organization. A switch hitter with strikeout propensity Buddy is an excellent base stealer. MLB Pipeline Jonathan Mayo described Reed last year as one of the best center fielders in baseball. Has some power as well when he makes contact.
He’s likely to be one of the first Rule 5 players to be selected on Thursday.

Reed was the #24 prospect in the #28 ranked system, and the A's left 5 spots open while not adding him to the 40-man.
He had a 93 wRC+ in AA in 2019, at age 24. He was then the PTBNL when the A's traded Profar to the Padres, and apparently they couldn't so anything with his 40 hit tool in their ATS.

I said I wasn't going to do this, but ...
BA has a list of 27 pitchers. CBS had a list of 15 pitchers and only 5 of them are in BA's list, and two are from the A's who have a weak system and left 5 spots open.
I made a list of 11 pitchers who were Pipeline top 30 prospects and had a 2021 ETA before COVID, excluding those from weak systems that left a lot of open spots. And 6 of those were on neither of the above lists!
That's 42 pitchers on other teams.
The names that show up on 2 of the lists, again excluding guys who were deemed not worthy by their clubs: (* = already a reliever, ^ on both the BA and CBS lists)
Lake Bachar, SD
^ Paul Campbell, TB
^ Brett de Geus, LAD *
Will Kincanon, CWS *
Trevor Stephan, NYY
^ Garrett Whitlock, NYY
Josh Winkowski, Tor
There's no way that the Pirates, Rangers, or Tigers pick a guy whose ceiling is set-up reliever, which describes de Geus (and Kincanon, but he has less buzz). I think Campbell goes in the top 3 picks. The questions are whether Whitlock is the guy they're hoping to grab and whether he'll also be taken in the first 3. If he is, and he is, do they go for de Gues or for a guy who may be less good in 2021 but possibly better down the road?

Brett De Geus would be a nice get. Brett De Geus - savant

We'll have more on Twitter in the morning, but don't be surprised if the Sox lose someone in minor league Rule 5. Hunter Haworth is a name to keep in mind.

That list has the 6 pitchers that I mentioned earlier, top 30 prospects that haven't been mentioned yet by list-makers. Two are relievers that I mentioned just after 11/20, the Brewers #14 Zack Brown and the Cardinals' #27, Roel Ramirez.
The four starters
Cody Sedlock, O's #27 (#13 farm, originally 0 open slots, now 2)
Brian Hanifee, O's #28
Elvin Rodriguez, Tiger's #29 (#6 farm, 0 -> 1 slot)
Pedro Avila, Padres #26 (#7 farm, 0 slots). Had an early 2019 injury and missed 2020 after TJ surgery, but should be OK now.
These guys all fit the profile of a player that would have been protected if there were room, so it's puzzling that 37 other pitches have been named, but not them.

I'll wonder that someone beat them to the top guy on their board.
Edit: after reading through the scouting reports of the pitchers on the above list again, I no longer have any idea who would be on the top of their board. Stephan seems most ready to contribute to an MLB bullpen.
The thing that will most excite me is if no pitchers are taken in the first three picks, for the opposite reason.
The thing that will puzzle me is if they pick a non-pitcher.

Ok, here comes the most exciting day of the Winter Meetings for the Red Sox.
I hope they take a Dodgers pitcher or Whitlock. I like Kasowski and De Geus.
Don't see the need for them to take a position player, although I wouldn't be shocked if they took a CF. Would prefer they take a pitcher instead - don't see a CF available that can hit at all.

Jonathan Mayo reporting that the Pirates will take RHP Jose Soriano from the Angels. Funny that of the 60+ names that BA reported on, he wasn't included.

Whitlock write-up from MLB Pipeline: Whitlock reached Double-A quickly after signing for an above-slot $247,500 as an 18th-rounder out of Alabama-Birmingham in 2017, but his development stalled when he had Tommy John surgery in July 2019. He gives hitters a tough look with his 6-foot-5 frame, low three-quarters slot and the extension in the delivery, which combine to produce heavy low-90s sinkers and low-80s sliders.

Love the pick. He should certainly get the opportunity to stick.
