I don't see why Ruiz would be protected when Fields & Olmsted weren't this year Different year, different roster make-up. The past is helpful, but not dispositive, on future decisions.

I don't see why Ruiz would be protected when Fields & Olmsted weren't this year In addition to amfox's point, Ruiz has scouted more consistently well than Olmsted. I agree that it's a long shot, but it's not really an apples to apples situation.

Cy Olmsted is currently rocking a 17/15 K/BB in 15 AAA innings, by the way.

Napoli will be back unless he has a terrible ret of the year. Sox will qualify him and no one will bite. Koji shoud be back on another one year deal. Some other spots will open up though. Some have been stated:
One of Ciriaco/Holt One of: Aceves/Mortenson/Morales One or both of: Hassan/Kalish One or both of: Lavarnway/Butler
Add locks: Cecchini, Workman, Ranaudo, Bogaerts, Brentz

Holt is younger and from the beginning was a better prospect, but Ciriaco is in Boston. I would drop Aceves in a heartbeat. Mortensen is a great longman and Morales is a great swing man/ LH specialist. Hassan can go, I don't even know why he is even on the 40-man. Kalish still has great potential and I would definitely hang on to him. Butler can go. Lavarnway still has great offensive potential and is adequate defensively. Definitely keep him. I don't see Hanrahan, Salty, Ellsbury, De La Torre, or Drew back next year. That is a total of 9 spots open next year, assuming that is how things go. Bogaerts, Ranaudo, Workman, Cecchini, and Brentz are 100% locks. That brings it down to 4 spots. Almanzar, Hazelbaker, De La Cruz, and Jacobs are interesting, but I only see one of them making the 40-man. Down to 3 spots. That should be enough for a FA acquisition, adding someone else, or a trade.

One of the reasons this is interesting is that if the Sox view a player as a definite for protection from the Rule 5 draft (i.e. Brentz), it alleviates the objection to adding him early, say in July.
They could bring Brentz to Boston in July and he doesn't burn an option for '13 as long as he is only optioned back for 19 or fewer days. I suspect that they will need another OF before the end of the summer. And where will Hassan be when he is needed?

Keury De La Cruz has picked his production up as of late. Does he have a shot now at making the 40-man this fall, with Jacobs traded to Chicago?

I'm still saying no way... not because I don't like him, just because I can't see another team keeping him on a MLB roster long enough to stick. I just don't think he's draftable, especially if he doesn't get promoted (why would the FO right now?). Edit: is KDLC's ceiling really high enough a team would make that investment in time/roster spot? Seems like I'm missing a scouting report.

I do not see a team burning a 25 man roster spot on him. Not in the era of 13 man bullpens. A defense first catcher needs to be portotected because a team can afford to carry a defense only catcher as a backup. They can't afford to carry an outfielder that raw.

Jeremy Hazelbaker was not selected in Rule 5 last year. Comparatively, he was light years ahead of KDLC. He's not going to need R5 protection.

Hazelbaker would be a G-dsend for the Phillies right now with revere out for possibly the season. Big John Mayberry Jr having been forced to play it even since he went down. Shame they won't take Hazelbaker straight up for papelbon, then pay half of his salary (Pap's) to boot huh :-)

Cecchini is a lock IMO (together with Bogaerts, Brentz and Workman). I see KDLC as a possibility but not very likely. Jacobs will depend on his continued development. You also have to look at the 40-man roster to determine who will be off the list. Currently anticipated free agents: Ellsbury Saltalamacchia Hanrahan Drew Napoli Easily droppable from the 40-man roster: Hassan Carp One of Holt/Ciriaco One of Mortenson/Aceves Just to update this from seven weeks ago, my current projection is as follows: Pitchers - gone Aceves, Hanrahan, Uehara, Mortensen, DFA Wright; add Ranaudo, Workman, Ruiz Position players - gone Napoli, Ellsbury, Drew, Saltalamacchia, DFA Hassan, Holt, Butler, Kalish (not currently on 40-man); add Snyder, Brentz, Bogaerts, Almanzar, Cecchini This leaves three open spots on the 40-man roster. I'll take my chances with Jacobs, KDLC, Hernandez, Stroup and JHaze but will strongly consider adding De La Torre, Maier and/or Rowland-Smith in order to prevent one of them from becoming a minor league free agent. Updating this from two months ago, Ciriaco, Aceves and Mortensen have been DFA'd; Workman, Snyder, De La Torre and Beato have been added; and potential addition Jacobs has been traded. My current projection is as follows: Pitchers - gone Uehara (who I hope is re-signed), Thornton, Bard, Hanrahan (not currently on 40-man); DFA Beato; add back Miller from 60-day; add Ranaudo Position players - gone Napoli, Ellsbury, Drew, Saltalamacchia; DFA Hassan or Kalish (not currently on 40-man); add back Ross from 60-day; add Brentz, Bogaerts, Almanzar, Cecchini This leaves two open spots on the 40-man roster (one if Uehara is re-signed).

I'm surprised you project Almanzar to be added, Adam. Care to share your reasoning? I have a hard time seeing him stick on a roster all year due to his defensive limitations (tough to use him as a bench player, even in the NL) and his still-developing bat.

Recently, Almanzar has been slumping. Moreover, I think he's more likely to be traded at the deadline as a 2nd piece in a significant deal than to remain in the system. However, unless his production falls off the table until September, the Red Sox may need to protect him rather than risk losing him and his plus power. Keep in mind that he's still only 22 and 1B is a position of need in the system.
Here's the current list of players who need protection (with Bogaerts, Brentz, Cecchini and Ranaudo removed):
Mario Alcantara, Michael Almanzar, Chris Balcom-Miller, Carson Blair, Chris Carpenter, Keith Couch, William Cuevas, Keury De La Cruz, Luis Diaz, Leonel Escobar, Derrik Gibson, Dreily Guerrero, Jeremy Hazelbaker, Jayson Hernandez, Chris Hernandez, Peter Hissey, Jeremy Kehrt, Aaron Kurcz, Juan Carlos Linares, Heiker Meneses, Boss Moanaroa, Nefi Ogando, Gerardo Olivares, Yunior Ortega, Oscar Perez, Mathew Price, David Renfroe, Pete Ruiz, Felix Sanchez, Kyle Stroup, Francisco Taveras, Raynel Velette, Jose Vinicio, Kolbrin Vitek, Shannon Wilkerson, Madison Younginer
The most interesting names on this list are Almanzar, Price and Kurcz. Price is someone I would expect to go to the AFL this fall (and therefore may be promoted to Portland before the end of the month, otherwise would be the sub-AA guy) and, given the performance of most of the listed players has an outside shot at being added to the 40-man roster.

While Chris MArtin is apparently not Rule 5 eligible until 2014-15, Brock huntzinger is eligible this offseason. I don't see his name anywhere i your projections or list of eligibles. Surely, he would need protection, no?

Surely, he would need protection, no? Correct, he's a free agent if not added to the 40-man; that's why he was not on the above list. I like Brock, but I suspect that I like him better than do the Red Sox, based on his usage and history. I expect he will leave as a free agent and get an opportunity elsewhere. If I were the Red Sox, I would protect him at the end of the year to prevent that from happening.

Just for perspective, here's how some of the notables from 2012 have fared this season:
Josh Fields - MLB - 14.1 IP , 5.65 ERA , 4.43 xFIP , 10/2 K/BB , 4 HRA. Was on the DL From April 8 - May 31. Ryan Pressly - MLB - 43.2 IP , 3.09 ERA, 4.56 xFIP , 30/17 K/BB , 1 HRA Michael Olmsted - AAA - 42.2 IP , 6.33 ERA , 5.05 FIP , 44/30 K/BB , 5 HRA

Think their is as much upside in keeping Carp around as in using a roster spot on a Almanzar/KDLC. Why thinking moving those 2 for any kind of helpful piece at all before the deadline is a good idea, based on what they got out of Jacobs from Chicago.
Price have been intrigued about since was drafted and finally.. Healthy and not under suspension he is performing. Some team might take a flyer on a useful BP piece and maybe should be protected. The other 4 "not definite" on the list? Only Couch and *maybe* Stroup, or Ruiz would have a chance at being selected IMO.

I like having a decent supply of relievers with options on the 40-man - Alex Wilson types. In this case, I guess that means Huntzinger, maybe Kurcz depending what his status is.

Kurcz should be on pace to pitch in a game next spring. I believe it has been slightly more than five months from his surgery.
Typically, a pitcher will begin to throw a baseball after 16 weeks and throw off a mound after six months. He would then ramp up to game conditions over the next 4-6 months.
If the schedule holds, he should be able to throw at full velocity during ST.
