The Red Sox have some very good prospects in their system. Unfortunately, not all of them pan out. Prospects don't make it all the time. Not to be negative, but out of the Red Sox top 5 according to MLB.com, who do you think is least likely to pan out?

Owens and it's not even a question.

Maybe this is a silly question that actually has a concrete answer but what's the definition of "pan out"? Make it to the majors? Have some kind of success?

Is this the 'which prospects out of the following won't pan out?' or 'Let's make Henry Owens feel really bad' post. That's pretty rough company up against those 4, Why not cut it bac to those 4 and ask the question...because almost anyone you drop in that slot next to those 4 gets to leave the island.

These are kids trying to achieve their dream and you want to poll which one is least likely NOT to pan out? I actually find this offensive for a Soxprospects message board.

I think Henry Owens is pretty much going to be the consensus pick here. He may very well end up being better than most of those guys, but he's just so much further away right now.

Yeah, I mean, including Owens with the top four just makes this an easy answer. Not only is he a whole year of development behind Barnes, but as a raw left-handed starting pitcher drafted out of high school entering his second year in the system, he's intrinsically a higher-risk prospect.
A better question may be: which of the following high-ceiling prospects, none of which have yet reached AA, is most likely to develop into a star? Blake Swihart, Henry Owens, Garin Cecchini, Brandon Jacobs.

Why on earth would we lump a kid who was drafted out high school and only has one season of professional baseball under his belt to two highly polished college prospects and a guy with 5 years of experience? Obviously of that group Owens will have the greatest range of possible outcomes.

We don't do this kind of thing on this board. Sorry.
It's not that nobody can speak negatively of a player, but I'm not thrilled about having a discussion about which guys "won't pan out." It's similar to why we don't have "cut watch" threads anymore - these are people trying to succeed in a profession. Players and their families read the board, etc.
And besides, even beyond that, as described above, this poll was pretty ill-conceived on a few levels.
