They don't have a choice. Could be 3 games out by Friday.

How could we possibly have the intel required to know the answer to this?

No. Sale should listen to the guys whose job it is to tell him when to pitch. Especially the highly paid doctors and training staff that want him to have another rehab start to make sure his arm is 100%. The organization has been clear all along that they are going to get Sale back when he is 100% ready for the rest of the season. The goal isn’t to get him back for one start, it’s to have back for the rest of his career. Don’t push it for one extra start.

With Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom both suffering setbacks recently, there's no such thing as "They can't wait anymore." Even just for this year they'd risk losing him for even longer by bringing him back too quickly.
Agreed with the above post that the correct answer is that none of us here have nearly enough information to have an informed opinion on this.

So the doctors have cleared him to pitch but just not at the ML level, ok I get it. So these Dr's can control how hard he is throwing? How hard he is trying? LOL
What are you trying to say, that he is only throwing at 80%? 90%? I think Sale decides how hard he is going to throw and I think he knows what he is feeling more than a Dr. The Dr's can not control anything once he starts throwing, it is up to him. All anyone else can do is look at the results, how he pitches and how he feels afterwards. He has to be honest with himself.

Two things to keep in my mind from his last post-game press conference: - He called his five-inning rehab start for the WooSox at Polar Park, Saturday, his “first real day of work in two years.” meaning having a normal preparation/routine... - He was throwing 91-92 mph by design "trying to get the feeling for his fastball command". He's very close but he's not there yet. I totally understand that he's probably better than half of the starters already but he also gave up some LOUD contact in the 4th and 5th inning to the Blue Jays AAA hitters. I really want Sale to be fully operational when activated: Doting the corners with 96-97 mph heat with zip on it setting hitters up for his sliders. I'm willing to wait.

Let's put it this way. Lets say he has a rough 1st inning in his first appearance and throws 35 pitches. Then he gets destroyed in the 2nd inning and has to come out because he's not used to throwing 35 stressful pitches in an inning. And then he's more sore than normal the next few days.
What do you do with that absolute disaster of a situation? Put him right back on the IL?
How about avoid that by taking their time?

If Sale starts one start early vs Toronto what’s the upside there... you could lose anyways if he starts.... or win anyways if he doesn’t.... say Sale starting a turn early adds *maybe* an expected .25 wins to the season.... and that might be generous. Is that really worth risking a setback?
Edit: Not to mention he’s under contract for the foreseeable future.... not exactly a rental guy where it doesn’t impact the team long term if something goes wrong

I’m not saying they would hit sale. But I like him better in his first start vs a different team.

Come on, that could happen even if He threw 3 dominant innings and then started getting hit hard by AAA batters in the 4th and his velocity was down in the 5th. Tate Matheny saved him a couple of runs with a great HR robbing catch. If he pitches like that against Toronto he wouldn't have been as fortunate. He probably could use one more start to try to get his stamina better for the 4th and 5th innings. Doesn't do the Sox good if he pitches 3 good innings and then gets whacked around in the 4th inning. I think one more start would help him with his stamina so he can be used to getting through the 5th inning with his stuff by the time he faces major league competition.

Like it or not (and I like it), CB and AC are playing the long game. They have a vision of where they want to go and a plan to get there.
All year, AC's patience with players (like Renfroe and Hernandez) has been rewarded, and IMO he especially needs to stick to his plan now when the team is in a rough stretch. What are the consequences if Sale is viewed as a game-changer, comes back early, and doesn't have it vs. the consequences if he comes back as part of a regular process and shows signs of being the old Chris Sale? Isn't Cora right to increase the odds of the second possibility happening?
We don't know what goes on in the clubhouse, but I certainly want to believe there is a plan and that Sale has been part of formulating it. Whatever it is, and I assume that it is what has been announced publicly, they should stick with it.

If Sale makes his next rehab start on Saturday, does that mean he will return to the Red Sox to face the Rays next Thursday?

As a loyal Jordan's Furniture customer with a custom sectional on the line, I want Sale to make as many starts as possible with the big club. Possibly selfish.

I’ve read everything everybody has posted as to why Sale shouldn’t start in Toronto but I’m not swayed or convinced, I still think Sale should start game 1 of Saturday’s double header ( not Friday)
