Oof. Just saw the last strike. Brutal way to end the Giants’ season. Damn shame too. 2021 Giants were one of the most surprising teams in recent memory. Not sure they would have got to Scherzer, but they deserved a fair shot at it.

That’ll leave a mark.

They finished what they started.

Scored every pitch of that game while enjoying the hell out of it until ... and still can't get the bad taste of the last pitch out of my mouth. They have to allow replay for check-swings, at least on strikeouts. And it's not as if it would take minutes of looking at multiple angles. It would take ten seconds. Give every team a max of one upheld.
While we're at it, the rule that says the Wild Card winner is always the 4th seed is indefensible. Not having to play in the WC game is a huge incentive to win the division. Also limiting the WC winner to 4th seed is punishing teams for playing in a better division. Once the WC has been determined, seed the teams by wins.

This has probably been said above in this thread, but while it would be exciting to play against the Dodgers, we would get home field advantage if the Braves can beat them Remaining 2021 postseason teams, by regular season win % Giants: .660 Dodgers: .654 Astros: .586 Red Sox: .568 Braves: .547 www.mlb.com/news/world-series-home-field-advantage

I didn't know that. I thought it went by playoff seeding which would pretty much prevent a wild card from getting the home field advantage. Go Braves for even more reasons.

Good game between the Giants and Dodgers last night. Like others have said, the ending was extremely disappointing. To have an epic season end like that - rung up on a check swing that from all accounts looked checked is awful.
Watching the game I could see that the Dodgers lineup is thinner without Muncy, but it's still a good lineup, especially at the top with Mookie and Turner as big table setters.
But that pitching is ridiculous. I don't see how anybody beats Scherzer, Walker, and Urias. And Roberts is being more creative these days, using two openers to mess up the Giants platoon system, using Urias as his bulk guy, and then using Jansen as a setup man and closing with one of his aces, Scherzer.
Anything is possible but it's hard to see how anybody beats the Dodgers. I think the Braves would be fortunate to win 2 games and I think whoever takes the ALCS will struggle with that pitching in the World Series. The Dodgers won 106 games and actually underachieved their pythaogorean record which shows they should have won 109 games. They are ridiculously great.

Admittedly didn't watch much of the game, and the check swing to end it was pretty brutal (although it's kind of insane that there isn't really a rule for that either - "broke the plane" isn't actually a thing), but for those who thought Doug Eddings didn't have a good game behind the plate, UmpScorecards begs to differ:

+0.68 runs to the winning team in a 1-run game isn't great. The misses were few, but consequential and one-sided.

There were 8 individual plays last night that had a higher run expectancy than the amount the home plate up affected the entire game with 132 pitch calls.

I'd argue that Eddings didn't miss many, but the ones he did were really damn important. Especially against Bryant in the 4th with no outs and Urias struggling to throw strikes. To get 2 gift strikes in one at bat with no outs and a runner on first in a tie game eventually won by 1 run is pretty damn significant. The prior batter, he also got a very borderline call on Crawford. One thing UmpScorecards does not do is count how many borderline pitches are called correctly for one team if the other team does not get them. Technically, pitch one to Crawford below is a strike, but it was a strike by maybe a seam or a fingernail. And it certainly didn't look like one when live. This is in 2 straight at bats with 0 outs: Crawford (pitch one was a called strike): Bryant (pitch 3 and 5 were called strikes) Also, that Knebel missed strike called a ball missed the target by more than a foot. That should always be called that way, even with robot umps IMO.

But yeah, it seems like saying the umps cost almost a run in a one run game doesn't really feel like a "nothing to see here" situation.

At 9:15 PM last night I was so tired that I was actually more interested in organizing the papers in my room (project in progress) than the ballgame that was being recorded. I thought I'd blow off a CS game for the first time in years.
I took a nap and was awakened by my midnight alarm (to take melatonin) and immediately thought, what was I thinking?
That was a tremendous ballgame.
(I went to bed at 8:30 AM, but that's not that late for me ... I'd been averaging 7:00 AM for the past 10 days).

I would like to see Scherzer in a Sox jersey, please. I'd like to see Scherzer in a Sox uniform, but think the Dodgers will bring him back or stay on the west coast - But what about a guy like Verlander? Coming off TJ, but the last full season he pitched he won the cy young and wont be a guy you give more than two years. I'd like them to look at some short-term, high upside guys to bring into the rotation and give Cora a lot of options. Wonder if the Astros offer him the qualifying offer...
