There are two ballparks in the major leagues that are just off-the-charts embarrassing.
Too bad the Sox couldn’t hit a few 305’ fly balls.

Matzek just had the relief appearance of the year comes in with tying run on second and blew away the next three batters including Mookie.
Add than comes in the 8th and retires hitters 2/3/4 on 6 pitches

And the Braves upset the Dodgers and it's now Atlanta and Houston in the World Series.
Such a shame the Sox disappeared after the 1st inning of Game 4. If the Sox got past Houston and played anything like they did against NY in the Wild Card game, the way they played against TB on the ALDS and the way they handled Houston the first 3 games, I would have really liked their chances of knocking off Atlanta in the Series.
No NL juggernaut in the Series.
I think Houston will destroy the Braves, but then again I thought Atlanta had no chance against the Dodgers.

the randomness/luck component of the playoffs and small sample sizes...I mean Rosario is a decent little player I guess, but I know it will never happen but I wish fans keep this example in mind before losing their s*#t next Time when the FO doesn’t add that available star player at the trade deadline because « he is the missing piece to win the WS ». MLB playoffs are such a crapshoot just ask the White Sox, the Dodgers, Giants, Dodgers etc etc

The 88-win Braves are about to be in the world series, having knocked off the 106-win Dodgers. The 107-win Giants and 100-win Rays didn't make it as far as the 92-win Red Sox.

So when will the Sox win a World Series with a deeply flawed 85 win to 89 win team? They've won 4 championships this century and all 4 won more than 95 games. In all 4 cases they were as good if not better than everybody else in the regular season.

My main point is that while history has the 73 Mets or 87 Twins or 06 Cardinals, when team building you still want a team constructed more sturdier than a team that has to catch lightning on a bottle where everything has to break right. The Sox had particular flaws that plagued them at particular stretches during the season so when the Sox season was killed off by a bipolar offense, erratic defense and a leaky bullpen these were familiar issues that got exposed finally in the ALCS after the Sox played like the best version of themselves that we saw for 4 months during the first 8 postseason games. I think it means that Theo had it right. Dont necessarily build a uber team but rather one that can consistently win 95 games or so and then one of those seasons let the law of averages work and win at least one.

Yep, agree with every word of that, including your diagnosis of the 2021 Red Sox. I just think the margin between '100-win juggernatur' and '90-win team that sneaks into the playoffs' is not so large that the randomness of the playoffs can't regularly turn over the apple cart when those two teams face each other, especially with the current playoff format.

It’s more important to make it in than it is to maximize your true talent level. For instance, for a perennial 90 win true talent team that is playing a little above expectations and is on a 95-win pace, it is a bad idea to make deadline moves to try and get yourself up to 100 wins at the cost of making yourself five wins worse next year. (These numbers are unrealistic but are meant to illustrate the dynamic.)

Damn, why couldnt the Sox have seen this version of Framber Valdez in Game 5? The Braves are hammering him in the first inning. Last time it was 1 run in 8 innings. This time he's already given up at least 2 runs in the 1st inning.
