Eleven scoreless innings through two starts. Four hits, 12 strikeouts, zero walks, one HBP, .036 WHIP, 12.5 pitches/inning. Age appropriate. Sick.

Walter is currently averaging 12.8 P/IP, which is down from 15.4 P/IP last season.
Much of the improvement is likely reflected in the other peripherals, but it's impressive nonetheless.

Walter's 29 Ks are the most in all of the minors for pitchers who have yet to walk anyone. Here's some footage from Ian:

What are the odds we see him in Boston this fall?

He pitched 89 1/3 Innings last year, I presume he’ll ramp it to 120 for this year maybe? Unless they give him a breather in the mid season like they used to do with pitching prospects, I don’t see them giving him ML innings in fall. He’s not on the 40 man roster too. Baring injuries or terrible performances , I’m sure we’ll see Bello and Groome getting a taste though.

Red Sox: Brandon Walter, LHP (No. 8), slider Walter has added velocity since signing for $35,000 as a 26th-round redshirt junior out of Delaware in 2019, and his now low-80s slider destroys left-handers and works against right-handers with its sharp horizontal action. He's excelling in Double-A, ranking second in the Minors with a 60/3 K/BB ratio and third in walks per nine innings (0.6) while logging a 3.14 ERA in 43 frames. www.mlb.com/news/prospects-with-best-secondary-pitches-2022?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Fwiw, the pitch has among the best horizontal movement of any slider in baseball. Period.

Can you make it all pitchers instead of just qualified? I bet he's still at or near the top, which is kinda nuts.

About time
I wonder if there's another level to unlock. I listened to a Kyle Boddy interview where he said the Rays unlocked Tyler Glasnow's potential by just telling him to aim middle middle every single pitch because his stuff is spectacular but his control wasn't. There's an interview where Walter says they set up middle every pitch until two strikes last year. Three walks in 50 innings is so low that it makes me think he's better off giving up a few more base on balls with a more challenging pitch strategy.

Sorry to start a thread but wasn't sure best place to ask. Any idea what is going on with him? I know he had a neck strain (?) but it has been months and essentially ended his year. I was hoping he would provide a viable option for bullpen depth.
Just curious if there is any more current info.
thnx

The longer we go without an update, the more my mind starts thinking worst case scenarios - labrum etc.

The longer we go without an update, the more my mind starts thinking worst case scenarios - labrum etc. The only diagnosis related to neck spasm that would really concern me is some sort of a nerve compression, primarily a thoracic outlet injury. However, aside from a brief mention by Speier in his notes a few weeks ago there's been really limited information on Walter's status. And if it were worse case scenario thoracic outlet I think we would have some sort of context that he was having numbness, tingling and weakness in his arm. Fingers crossed.

There was an update in the Athletic today about Walter's rehab. From an interview with Brian Abraham:
"He’s going to miss the rest of the season, obviously, but we’re hopeful he’s going to have a normal off-season ramp-up to be ready for next year. Without getting into too many specifics, it’s a neck strain that has turned into a little bit more of a back issue — a bulging disc is actually what we’re talking about here."

Maybe the Red Sox need a back specialist on the training staff, Houck, Walter, Hosmer, multiple players with back spasms
