Didn’t realize he was so mediocre this year. He was great in 2020 when they won it all. I still think he’d be a nice piece of the bullpen right now. He’d be a fine piece and he is still pretty young so there is room for some further development but at the end of the day he’s a reliever that doesn’t miss bats. I do love power sinkers- particularly as a SP as they can pitch to contact and manage their pitch count a little better- but when I’m looking at late innings guys I want ppl that throw strikes and miss bats. He’s useful when you need a ground ball though and he’d certainly have a role here. He can contribute to a MLB roster which Downs can’t say the same about currently, but at the end of the day Graterol is a 1 inning guy that doesn’t miss bats so he’s got a pretty limited ceiling. Downs can field his position well, it’s just gonna be about if he can make contact consistently enough. He’s still young for AAA so I don’t think he’s a finished product- and his upside is significantly higher. He also has a floor as a non-major leaguer tho, whereas we know Graterol is a big leaguer. I think the problem with Downs is that they kept him and didn't flip him when he had top 100 prospect status. That was probably the best option out of Downs versus Graterol.

Easy to say using hindsight. Imagine if they flipped Mookie as a prospect using that same logic.

I'm not going to argue on a dead thread other than to say yes, it's a gms job to evaluate who's going to have the best chance to be a major leaguer and who doesn't. That's it. Done talking.

Coming soon to a thread near you: "How Real is Ref?" Yesterday boosted his wRC+ to 207, in 32 PA.
Teaser trailer: from August 15 onward last he had 41 PA vs. RHP and had a wRC+ of 2. Not a typo.
He was one of the best hitters on the farm in Worcester as well. Doesn't chase, doesn't miss in the zone, great exit velocities. Struggled a little with velo but to the point he was merely ok not bad.

OK, so you're using hindsight to judge Bloom then, not Downs? Lots of prospects bust. Some do not. Some exceed expectations. That's why you hold onto as many as possible. You don't trade everyone you think might bust when you think their value is highest (since it's not the highest if you have reason to think he can bust, so will just about everyone else). They can also end up being much better. Probably why the Yankees didn't trade Judge who had a very high bust potential. This expectation that GMs should be able to predict the future with 100% accuracy and be able to rip off every other GM because they cannot possibly know the same things is insane.
