Prospects Live Ranking and analysis 33 - Mikey Romero, SS Orange Lutheran Menifee, CA
Romero is a solid defender on the dirt with obvious strengths in barrel-manipulation and timing cadences at the plate. He can really hit, and in a class lacking polish within the prep bat ranks, Romero presents safety and projection at a premium position. He's shown the ability to get to any pitch, sometimes expanding the zone but keeping the at-bat alive. He's a gap hitter right now and doesn't project to tap into a ton of power as he matures, though 40 game power is squarely within reach. Most evaluators believe he'll have no issue sticking at shortstop where his fantastic footwork, rhythm, athleticism and internal clock play beautifully. Romero needs to get stronger and add impact at the plate, but the swing is picturesque and the hit tool is very real. Should Romero add some raw power to his game, the profile immediately accelerates. We think he's a good bet to go earlier than where he's featured on most boards.

That is a smooth, easy swing Yes. Look how relaxed his hands and arms are...

Tough to go against Bloom when it comes to the draft. I just wish they went with a polished college bat. Gilbert was sitting right there. But I guess I understand the spread the money around philosophy

Cole Winn, Garrett Mitchell, Gerrit Cole. These are surely baseball names generated by an AI bot, yes?
Baseball is a wonderful sport composed mostly of Dominicans with names like Gransalozar Juarez and white Americans who grew up within a quarter mile of an Applebee's.
Anyway, I'm too dumb to have an opinion about how good this pick was, but how much fun is it going to be for Mayer and Romero to move through the system together? You know they're already dreaming about playing in Fenway together... And that'll only make it more fun for us.

“He can hit. He’s a hitter. He can really, really hit,” said Altobelli. “He’s got unbelievable baseball IQ. He’s a complete baseball player. And he can do the hardest thing there is in the game better than most, which is hit.” Paul Toboni. “What happened in 2022 I think was interesting in that, really toward the end, he started to grow into some power maybe a little bit later. … When he started showing that, we were super, super intrigued because we already loved the kid, we loved the positional profile, and we loved his ability to hit.” www.bostonglobe.com/2022/07/17/sports/red-sox-surprise-first-choose-high-school-shortstop-mikey-romero/?event=event25

Looks like his 2 older sisters play pro softball. One is an assistant coach for duke and former Olympian. Good bloodlines

Pure hit tool, up-the-middle athleticism, high baseball IQ, good makeup. That's a lot of stuff that you can't coach and that the coaches won't have to coach around.
You can't trade draft picks and (obviously) you can't control where your top pick is going to be, so if you like a kid at 24 who you might've been able to get at 34 but not at 41, you have to pull the trigger.

Good talker. Says he's gained 7 lbs since his season ended.

Here is my stock Tieran Alexander disclaimer: If you're familiar with Mason McRae, there is a similar baseball analytic hobbyist named Tieran Alexander who clearly did a ton of work in compiling some pre-draft reports on a large number of players (I think 500). I want to be really clear before people tear into me....I don't know much about this guy but I'm pretty comfortable guessing he's no baseball scout and I doubt he has any meaningful experience as a former player. He's just a stats guy but an obsessed one at that, apparently with lots of access to TrackMan data. So that said, I'd take any of his rankings, grades, and opinions with giant grains of salt. I'm going to share a number of reports from him though because there's a ton of data included in them that are hard, if not impossible, to find elsewhere. Here is his report on Romero (ranked 47):
