So my watch begins.

I could be wrong, but I think they'll wait until rosters expand in September. From the 40-man roster perspective, I'm assuming they'd DFA Familia unless Danish needs to be shut down and put on the 60-day IL. Maybe some juggling, but probably nothing too crazy. I'm just not sure who it would make sense to send down to make room on the 26-man roster. It would basically have to be Dalbec because otherwise you're carrying 3 first basemen and only 4 OF, with the starting CF being the backup MIF and the starting LF having recently left a game due to injury, but Dalbec does give them more flexibility in terms of playing righty/lefty matchups.

I don't think Danish will need to be shut down. He was probably close after pitching in 3 games, but then got COVID. Otherwise though, I agree with the point, and the problem with Dalbec versus Casas, as you say, is the handedness. I think they value that enough to wait until 9/1. Buuuuuut, the problem is that if you want to carry 3 catchers in September, and if you want to carry another arm, how do you then add Casas? It's very possible they just wait, although I'd consider DFAing Plawecki and going with 2 catchers.

I hope they do the villainous thing and wait until late April.

I would still like to see his power became a little less hypothetical than it's been so far. He has just 9 homers on the season in 270 PAs. Since he came back from his injury on July 12th he's got a very nice slash line of .291/.397/.509, but only 4 homers. In August he's got an even more not-really-challenged-in-AAA looking line of .305/.432/.492 but only 1 homer in 59 PAs. And that's playing most of his games in Worcester.

I hope they do the villainous thing and wait until late April. One question I'd have is: does (almost) every hitter need X number of PAs to adjust to the major leagues, where X might be different for each batter, but is nonetheless a sort of immutable number? In other words, could it be the case that, whenever Casas is brought up he'll need, say, 500 PAs in the majors before he hits his stride? If that's the case, then I'd rather he absorb 100 or so of those this season.

I'm not aware of anyone finding an effect like after a systematic look through the historical data. Even in your hypothetical, I don't think you're finding an entire year of control's worth of value by calling him up now.
Much as I would like to find an escape, I am afraid that the situation really is that you either act dishonorably toward the player or you hurt your team's long term chances of winning by a noticeable amount.

One question I'd have is: does (almost) every hitter need X number of PAs to adjust to the major leagues, where X might be different for each batter, but is nonetheless a sort of immutable number? In theory I guess you could see if more AAA PAs --> shorter adjustment periods in MLB, and if not that would point to some fixed period of adjustment to get used to MLB pitching. But it's easy to imagine confounding variables that would make it hard to test.

Given this year's injuries, I pretty much just assumed the worst. Designating Plawecki seems like the right move to me basically no matter what they want to do in September. Even if they carry three catchers (which might not be practical, as you said), is there any reason to prefer McGuire/Plawecki/Wong to McGuire/Wong/Hernandez? Not sure what Plawecki offers at this point beyond clubhouse vibes, so almost seems like a waste of a roster spot if you've got other catchers who could use some big league reps.

Yes, Plawecki is a better defensive catcher than Hernandez. I think it's fairly unlikely that both Wong and Hernandez come up.

Given Plawecki's defense and familiarity with the staff, I understand keeping him while the team it technically still going for it, but he's not part of the future so there's not much point in giving him at-bats/experience over Wong/Hernandez. Currently they're down to 6.4% chance of making the playoffs (per Fangraphs). Not sure at what point they'll choose to fully throw in the towel, but it has to be getting close. Would like to see similar moves with the relief pitchers. There are a half dozen guys with potential who need to be added to the 40-man or risk losing (although most/all probably won't get picked given the league-wide crunch) and it would be nice to get a look at them in the big leagues before deciding (unless they're hoping to 'hide them' in the minors).

Seemed like today was a perfect storm for him to come up, maintain rookie eligibility and Hosmer went to the IL. Guess we don’t see him until next season.

Franchy? Again? NOOOOOOO!!!! I don't think I can take it? This thing went off the tracks right before and after All Star Break but not bringing up Casas now seems more like a commitment to insanity than still competing for the last WC spot.

If Sox call up Casas and he struggles all of Sox nation will right him off. Ruthless fan base we are

If they really think Hosmer's IL stint is going to be short one, I can see the logic. They don't want to shortchange Casas any at-bats, and the roster gymnastics gets easier after rosters expand. At this point, I think Plawecki over Wong is the most questionable roster issue.

He has a 38.8% K rate vs LHP with a meager.054 IsoP. He has the potential to be a tremendous defender at 1st base and crushes RHP...but he has some minor flaws that he needs to work on by facing as many southpaws as possible and they can't do that at tge ML level. Let him develop down thereso when he's up, he's up for good.

So keep him away from this bloodbath that is the Red Sox right now

You don't promote prospects based on performances and hot streaks, that's a bad way of doing buisness. You promote them when they hit the developmental bench marks you set for them. Last night Casas when 3-4 with a strikeout. The strikeout was the only at bat in which he faced a LHP, journeyman LOOGY Alex Claudio. He's still a work in progress high confidence or not.

Has this front office demonstrated that it knows a good time to call up a prospect? Not once have they called up a player who stuck.

Has this front office demonstrated that it knows a good time to call up a prospect? Not once have they called up a player who stuck. Is that really evidence of bad timing? It's certainly not evidence that they called up players too late... but feels more likely to me that they haven't exactly had great prospects to call up.
