Soooo.... just hypothetically.... why has the team not been interested in these two? I have my own reasons for not being particularly enthusiastic about either of them, but are there tea leaves about the front office's thinking? My guess would be the $ amount and wanting to keep wiggle room under the luxury tax hence why they have signed Yu Chang to a ML deal. Not sure on the $ amount of the deal but considering Andrus was rumored to want 8-10M and assuming Iglesias wants more than the ML minimum I can see their logic.

Those guys also may want more definitive roles, while the Red Sox may believe that each would be the 5th best middle infielder on the team if everyone else was healthy.

Just idly thinking again about the fact that an awful lot of people mentioned Andrus as an obvious potential target, and to a lesser extent Iglesias, and then Andrus ended up signing a 1/3 deal and Iglesias got a minor league deal while the Red Sox went with the more exotic solutions of trading for a typically injured Adalberto Mondesi and playing Kiké at SS. And while I sort of get it with Iglesias, I don't think I've seen any explanation for why they were seemingly never in on Andrus, or why Andrus' market was so weak in general. Did we ever get any reporting on this?
I say this as someone who was never high on Andrus but would have considered it a coup if they had gotten him for, say, 1/5 after Story's injury.

I mean, Mondesi is younger, cost the same (maybe cheaper if we got cash considerations instead of a PTBNL) and is better than Andrus, just more injury prone. You could MAYBE argue equally injury prone given Andrus's age, but I wouldn't. So I'll take the younger higher ceiling player on a team that isn't in "win-now" mode. Maybe Mondesi finally has a healthy season and you have anywhere from a super utility to full time infielder that you can re-sign or trade at the deadline depending on how your season is going. Or he has another unhealthy season, you end up using your other bench/depth options and all you lost was Josh Taylor.

Does Mondesi have any options remaining? Would it make sense to send him to Worcester for 3 months to see if he can get his game back after being unhealthy for so long?

I think it's some combination of them not being very high on Andrus, him wanting to feel confident he'll get 600 PA's, and his asking price being a lot higher than 1/3 back when the Red Sox had 3 fewer up the middle players under contract

From MLB.com: Players typically have three option years, but those who have accrued less than five full seasons (including both the Major and Minors) are eligible for a fourth if their three options have been exhausted already. For the purposes of this rule, spending at least 90 days on an active Major League or Minor League roster during a given season counts as one full season. Players also earn a full season if they spend at least 30 days on an active Major League or Minor League roster AND their active-roster and injured-list time amounts to at least 90 days in a given season.

And I like Mondesi better than Andrus myself, and in general like what they've done to cover for Story's injury (though I still would've liked to add Segura). I guess my question is more about why Andrus' market in general turned out to be so weak. Fangraphs projected him for 2 WAR and a 2/20 deal (and also projected Iglesias for 1 WAR and a 1/5 deal).

IMO, Andrus and Iglesias have age and a diminishing upside working against them. If Mondesi is remotely healthy he should be more productive. Taylor may have been a DFA waiting to happen, so the price was inconsequential.

138 votes. 1 of us said Kiké. Odd how it can all turn out. That said Iâm not sure I see him at SS all season.
