I'm wondering that too, give them a window to negotiate with Devers since they obviously aren't scared to give out a mega deal they were trying just struck out twice. Probably won't happen but I could see them being the best option now. Do the Giants really have much to offer in return, though? With the Mets you have a solid starting point in Baty. I dont know the Giants system as well, but I dont think it's that good. I'd look at the Mets or Dodgers. Whatever the Sox do, don't let Devers become a Yankee. I have to assume they have at least a few prospects that would help bolster the farm but true I don't know of anyone they have that fits my desire to get back at least one ML regular type player in a Devers deal. I won't count out the Mets but at some point enough has to be enough with their spending, but perhaps not? They're going to have close to if not a 400M payroll after their luxury tax bill. It's wild.

Could SF be a potential trade partner now for Devers? They were willing to spend big on Correa, so they could sign and extend him. What about something like John Brebbia, Luciano and Harrison for Devers and negotiating extension.

No, it's pretty accurate. Team spending over 200 million with a huge uphill battle to make the playoffs. They are the Angels. I'm talking about the Major League roster. But it could end up being true overall if they don't smarten up and sign the right players long term. No it's not accurate at all and it's ridiculous. The Angels haven't had a winning record since 2015, haven't made the playoffs since 2014 and they haven't won a single playoff game since 2009. So I'm sorry but it's a terrible comparison. Agreed. This comparison is nuts; sorry. For one, the Angels are extremely top heavy (Ohtani & Trout). Secondly, they’ve always made terrible FA decisions (Drury being the latest iteration). Staying on the topic, I don’t think there’s a chance Devers gets traded this off-season. He might get traded at the deadline if the team is bombing, but he exponentially increases the team’s chances at making a playoff berth via one of the WC slots with him on the roster.

Not a good match on their ML roster that would be helpful in 2023 though. Crawford, but Giants need him at SS after all.

David Villar and one of their big two prospects (Luciano and Harrison) seems like a plausible panic deal the Giants might do which would be giving up way too much. Villar is the only major leaguer with some value they can really afford to give up off that roster

Post hype but I liked him as a prospect. I do think Wong could surprise people this year, but the more young fliers the merrier.

I’m gonna float something….
Something involving Devers and Moncada trading places.
Moncada is currently making 14m with a pending free agency of 2026. The White Sox have a pretty impressive roster on paper…and maybe they’re getting annoyed with treading water after several seasons of looking like a big breakthrough was imminent. Theoretically with Devers/Anderson/Eloy/Luis and the pitching they have, they’re big contenders.
On our side, we get a blue chipper back home for three relatively cost controlled years. It’s a feel good story to some extent. It’s a gamble, no doubt, but a better one than hoping for someone like Baty or Jung to step in and rake anytime soon.
I love this idea, but also admit I don’t know how to balance the trade. I can respect arguments that state Boston OR Chicago have to throw more in. But I truly believe this is a “both sides win” type of framework, and something I hope the FO has considered.
A Godfather deal should be made to Raffy before Feb 1. I hope they come to agreement. Otherwise, a deal like this is a sensible roll of the dice

Otherwise, a deal like this is a sensible roll of the dice I'm pretty certain under the new CBT that Moncada would carry a 21 million price tag per year. For a guy who was essentially just replacement level last year some combination of Colas, Kopech and Montgomery better being coming back with him.

Is it time for the "Godfather Offer"? If/when Devers refuses then find a suitable trading partner to prevent losing him for less at the deadline or worse for a comp pick next fall.

The Steve Cohen gets mad after walking away from Carlos Correa trade:
Devers for
Brett Baty (3b of the future) Carlos Carrasco + Eduardo Escobar (Red Sox need meh ways to spend money in 2023, Mets don't want very expensive spare parts while over the highest tax level) Mark Vientos (Sox long rumored to be lusting after him)
Mets will also take Bobby Dalbec in the deal who the Sox would otherwise DFA

RedSoxStats made a comment awhile back about packing all the (inevitable?) [excrement] sandwiches into one offseason to pull all the bandaids off at once, and I heartily agree. I'd also sign Baty to a long extension immediately following the 2023 season as long as he holds his own at an adequate level.

This offseason has been a bit of a gut punch mostly from losing Xandy. In a way I'd rather take another gut punch now and deal Devers and begin the healing so to speak than to go through this same exact thing a year from now with Rafi. Rip the band-aid off and get it over with so we can begin to move on either way. I don't want to sit here next offseason listening to how much a priority Rafi is only to hear he inevitably signed some mega deal and the Red Sox weren't even in the top few bidders. Sign him or at least make a real attempt to do so now or trade him since I don't want to see him leave for a crummy draft pick.

Agree, unfortunately...the "tribal" emotional connection, that put the "fan" in fanatic, seems much less a consideration, when it comes to keeping even the elite of the band together...
...lose a young icon in the making, in Betts, Feb 2020, and, less than a month later 20yr icon TB12, I'd not be surprised both these two & other ownership groups, were probably thankful for that greasing of the emotional skids, allowing subsequent band aid ripping would hurt, but, seaming not as bad?

I heard something in passing on the sports radio. Do the Sox fear a long term deal and he might not stay in shape?
When you get a package of prospects back you never win the deal. Trading him would suck but if there going to waste time you have to make a decision this offseason. He is 26 so you can live with a long term deal.

I'm sick of this "trading Devers" stupidity. Lots of people seem to be onboard with the idea. Why? What do we have a minor league system for? Isn't it supposed to be a developing league? Draft some good players, develop them, then hope they do well in the majors. Some might even become Super Stars. That's what wins you championships...really good players. We had 3 back in 2018 and won it all. Then what happened? Betts goes. X is gone. Now you want to get rid of Devers, too? What's next? Bring up Mayer, Casas, Rafaela, Bello and Mata, watch them florish, then trade them away over money? That's what last place small market teams do. Like Tampa or Oakland. But, we are in Boston. We make zillions of dollars. The seat rates are the highest in the league, and went up again next year. Do you think the MFY's were ever going to let Judge go over money? All they had to do is match whatever he was offered. They knew that all along. We didn't ever make X a decent offer that he might accept.
If you want to win, you draft well, develop them, then pay what you have to in order to keep them long term. Then you win championships, year after year. No, trading Devers for a bunch of throw-ins might look good on paper, but will not win anything, let alone dig you out of last place.
We're a big market team. We should act like it.

Practically nobody wants them traded. A lot of us are resigned to the premise that the Sox will fail to extend him. What reason is there to believe the Sox will extend him based on what happened to Betts and X? So the lesser of two evils us trading him rather than watching him walk away. But that certainly isnt the hope. I certainly wish the Sox would give him a market rate offer and extend him. I'm as tired as you are of watching franchise players leave, particularly for practically very little.

Only thing worse than watching your stars leave, is it happening when you get nothing but a 4th round comp pick for them. Sucks Betts left, yet they at least got some value for him. Bogaerts basically nothing, you can't let Devers leave for a comp pick. Offer him an extension, if you can't agree you have to trade him. Why? It likely cost more next year.
