Hamilton also finished the year red hot, there may have been an adjustment he made that made them think there’s more where that came from. It’s certainly not indefensible
Abreu was always likely to be added. Law says he may be a starting OF (for whatever that’s worth). He also shows some good tools.

Jake Reed and Caleb Hamilton DFA'ed, per Speier. Roster is back at 40.

That we still have Taylor, Brasier, Cordero and Darwinzon disappoints me. Ugh

That we still have Taylor, Brasier, Cordero and Darwinzon disappoints me. Ugh "Major League Baseball's deadline for tendering contracts to unsigned players falls on Nov. 18 this year, or a couple of weeks earlier than normal. "

That we still have Taylor, Brasier, Cordero and Darwinzon disappoints me. Ugh Don't worry, they need a starter, 1-2 LHRPs and a LHH OFer, so it makes sense to hold onto these guys until they're ready to be replaced. The guys who were cut may end up in Worcester; that's less likely with the guys above.

Next year it will be much, much easier to steal a base.
Throwing over once during a PA remains as is. But if you throw over a second time, and fail, then the runner can take a substantially bigger lead because a 3rd failed attempt gets you the base gratis. And because there is thus a reason to avoid a second throw over, runners will take a somewhat bigger lead after the first throw over, in order to bait the pitcher into making a second failed throw.
I love this new rule to death. Baserunners have always studied pickoff moves. But now pitchers will have to study baserunners' ability to get back to 1B from a lead.
No Sox fan needs to have the potential importance of a SB explained to them.
Hamilton was a lock to be on some team's September, and hopefully post-season roster. It's funny that we all missed that when they announced the rule changes.

I believe Caleb Hamilton was DFA'd (1 SB), not David Hamilton (70 SB).

Unfortunately you can't steal 1st base. Hes very fast. But is he more valuable than Ward? That was a stunner. The extra innings runner helps a lot but not sure its worth keeping a guy all year. He could have probably passed through.

He could have probably passed through. I would argue the act of protecting him demonstrates the exact opposite. Maybe I’m overtly confident in them but I don’t feel this front office is going to make a highly scrutinized move (or misstep in your eyes) haphazardly if they didn’t feel it was absolutely necessary to protect a highly valuable asset.

This article from Tomase proved a very sound explanation of exactly why Hamilton was protected. www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/why-did-red-sox-protect-david-hamilton-rule-5-draft-mlb-rule-changes-offer-clue

Would you carry a pinch runner over an extra bullpen arm? I'm not saying Ward would have 100% been in the majors next year but unless they're upping the 26 man roster to 28 through out the season its tough to justify a "specialist" over someone who can help the team at various points in the game. The Sox went 7-11 in extra innings last season. So does it really make sense to keep someone on the roster that will be pinch running in 18 of those games? Granted you can use a pinch runner every single game. But the real question is whats more valuable? Another arm or a guy who might play here and there.

Yeah you carry Hamilton because you believe in him as a possible utility player. Not because he's fast and MLB just changed the rules on the size of the bases and pickoffs.

This is the 40 man roster though not the ML roster, they don't need to carry Hamilton on the ML roster as he has 3 years of options to potentially figure something out and maybe he becomes a valuable up the middle utility player with excellent speed.

It's not really Hamilton over Ward, they could've added Ward and cut someone like Chang or Cordero, etc. Then traded off the 40 man later if they needed room for FAs (I think).
Hamilton makes some sense. I could see a team with room grabbing him since he is usable right now as a runner and utility guy (despite questionable defense) especially if you don't really care about winning. And if the team likes him, you don't want to lose him.
Ward is interesting. We'll see if he gets drafted. Maybe they think it will be harder to stash a reliever with the new rules?
Dunno, I would've protected both, but they know more than me.

Yeah you carry Hamilton because you believe in him as a possible utility player. Not because he's fast and MLB just changed the rules on the size of the bases and pickoffs. Hamilton is a better hitter than Jeter Downs currently is. He can outfield corners (certainly better than Arroyo), and can play SS and 2B. He is a better option than Marwin Gonzalez and Danny Santana…

Hamilton has ZERO experience at the outfield corners, and not enough arm to be good in right. He has NOT been a good SS or even particularly good at 2b. There is no guarantee he would hit better than Marwin or Danny and he would certainly be a worse fielder unless he improves a lot. After age 25. He would be a great pinch-runner, but he needs to improve to be a utility player.

Keep in mind both Downs and Hamilton (to a lesser extent) have some pop. Downs could be an MLB 20/20. In both cases, if they both could get to a .330-.340 OBP, those singles become doubles. If they take a moderate step (and cut down on strikeouts), both could be great bench players or even a decent starter. No matter what, if you could have Downs, Hamilton, Raffeala, and Duran on roster (plus Story), defenses wouldn’t know which way was up. Each are potential 25+ steal guys. All Duran has to do is bunt (plus no more shift). Don’t give up on him yet.
