Not to take away from good post above, but Alfaro is not a viable everyday catcher. We can all answer that. Maybe a good enough backup. We'll see about Wong and McGuire. All in all the post above is probably the best summation of all the storylines and best questions to ask about the upcoming season. Personally, I doubt Alfaro is a viable catcher, too. I'm amazed he can hit .250 with that awful BB/K ratio of his. I think Alfaro is what Ronaldo Hernandez's ceiling is. Wong isn't that different. He has bad BB/K ratios, too, but I think he at least has a chance to be viable, but I'm not super optimistic about that. I'm not big on McGuire. He had 100 strong ABs for the Sox but I still dont think much of his offense at least for now although I can have my mind changed. Wouldn't surprise me at all if there's a carousel of catchers the next 3 years for the Sox of some sort. That's how the Rays operated when Bloom was the there. At least Wong and McGuire can hold their own defensively, maybe even strong defensive catchers.

This is interesting storyline. I wonder if this offer was made before the Yoshida offer?

I think him and Wong will hold their own and if there is an injury we have a strong 3rd option. Thats 1 position I feel very good about actually.

Feels like they're both backup material, but time will tell. Their defense is what's going to keep them around, if they stick around long enough long-term.

For me, the key storylines
1. Assessing the "grit"/clutch/resilience in the team. Are they the team that can come back from deficits? Are they clearly a "team" that coalesces and carries themselves with good body language? Can they form an identity - as some of the great recent Sox teams did? Can they beat the teams they should (on paper) beat?
2. Team general health, particularly with the starters - can they stay on the field?
3. Can the starters go reasonably deep - and can the pen hold leads?
4. Can the offense score enough runs in most games?
individually, I'll be watching Sale, Paxton, Bello and Jansen (pitchers), and Casas, Yoshida (can they become offensive leaders), Kiké (can he consistently hit?), and Raffy (is he ready to be the team leader)?

A storyline for me will be the rookies (I'm still counting Bello). What Casas, Bello, and Yoshida do can really have a transformative impact on this roster.
the defense is another storyline. I'm a little concerned with it up the middle, and with the new rule changes I ponder if it hurts this team.
The development of one Reese McGuire who is entering his age 28 season...which for a catcher could just be the beginning of his offensive prime. We know the defense is good but if the offense takes a step forward we have a stud behind the plate.

The Rays have changed up Eflin's change-up. The Sox almost signed Eflin before he went to the Rays to match the Sox offer.

www.mlb.com/news/opening-weekend-takeaways-2023I can't say I love that the takeaway MLB.com went with was, "Chris Sale had a bad start" rather than "The new-look lineup is going to battle," "The AL East is going to be a 5-team melee," or even "The new rules are going to make stolen bases a challenge." I dunno, just a weirdly negative reflection after a series win with some exciting comebacks (both failed and successful).

Yankees transfer Tommy Kahnle to 60 day IL List. Kahnle chose New York's smaller offer instead of Boston last off-season.
