Gotta give kudos to Pivetta in this one. He’s at least kept it close.

Raffy's contract would either end up Sandoval's ugly or Beltre's awesome. There's no in between. A LOT of things would have to go wrong for it to look like Sandoval’s contract.

One win in the LAA series and this would have felt like a very successful trip. As is it was underwhelming. Not the end of the world, though.

Eh, the chubby body type and the swing at boucing sliders and neck high fastballs give me a Sandoval vibe...I think that even Keith Law made the Sandoval comparison when he was a prospect. I didn't liked the deal qhen it was signed because of the risk it represents and I would've preferred saving that money to give Soto the biggest deal ever and I'm still holding the same opinion.

Red Sox can leave those bats in AZ. Get new ones back home that have some life to them.
A most forgettable game.

Maybe Devers would hit a bit better if he didn't have such a big wad of tobacco in his mouth The tire around his mid-section doesn't help either. He looks out of shape again to me.

Today’s game was a blood sacrifice for Celtics’ game 7, we’ll pick it up back at home

Gotta give kudos to Pivetta in this one. He’s at least kept it close. He was great. 3 shutout innings, no walks. Can't ask for more of that from a reliever. Its really comforting to have Wink, Kutter and Jake all able to cover those middle innings. One might start game 2 of the June 3rd DH, but I would not mess with their roles right now. Go ahead and give that start to Kluber.

Contrarian take: Rafael Devers is a delight and I'm glad he's on the team.

Raffy's contract would either end up Sandoval's ugly or Beltre's awesome. There's no in between. This is exactly the opposite of what I would say about his contract. It's such a big long-term deal that there's almost no way to get the kind of surplus Beltre provided. But Devers is also quite likely to be at least good for most of the contract so it's unlikely to turn into a major albatross (by contrast Sandoval had already been mediocre for three seasons when the Red Sox signed him, and there were some alarming signs of decline in the stats). So it's highly likely the contract ends up "in between."
Having said that... Devers is down to a 103 wRC+. On the one hand, maybe there's no cause for concern since his xwOBA is actually 5 points higher than it was last season and he's clearly being hurt by a .246 BABIP. On the other hand, his walk rate is below 5%, which is pretty terrible. I'm generally allergic to psychological speculation to explain player performance but I kind of wonder if he's trying to hit a bunch of homers to try to justify his big contract.

I think the original poster's Sandoval comparison was jestful hyperbole and some are taking it more seriously than he intended.
That said, if Raffy is bad or mediocre for the bulk of his contract, it'll be worse than Sandoval because the contract is twice as long and more than three times as rich. I don't expect that to happen and I don't think Radiohix does either.
Raffy's wOBA is .327, compared to an xwOBA of .366. That xwOBA is not far off from Zips' wOBA projection of .377 or the .373 he put up last year.
His EV, max EV, barrel% and hard hit% are all at or slightly above last year's numbers. He's having the kind of luck Dugo had for much of last year.
The main concern is, as incandenza said, his 4.7 BB%. His K% is also up a bit - 18.6 last year and 21.2 this year.
BB issues aside, though, I agree with the poster who said he should drop the tobacco habit. He's a young kid living a dream life. That junk is exposing him to the risk of his life turning to hell years down the line. Mouth cancer isn't going to spare him just because he has a lot of money, talent and popularity.
