The “corner outfielders need to hit for power” concept is very early 2000s. A front office should focus much more on just getting good players and much less on how they derive their value. That’s fair, but have the collection of Red Sox outfielders outhomered Aaron Judge this season? I think it’s close.

I think it is that *someone* should hit for power. So the idea that I, at least, am *slagging* Verdugo is false. But this team needs more power. They have a catcher. They have first and third bases. They have Story and Yoshida. Those are all committed for the next few years. So what is open? I like Duran and hope he can prove himself in CF. So there are limited places to improve and limited money. And this team is not that good, so simply extending this lineup doesn’t inspire. Thus, Verdugo offers a spot at improvement — while also presenting a decision.

Thus, Verdugo offers a spot at improvement — while also presenting a decision. They'll get a lot of power out of both CIF spots in a couple of years. If they stick with Dugo and go outside the organization to fill LF or DH (with Yoshi filling one of those spots), that's another opportunity to add power. LF and DH are usually not super expensive spots to get production from. Throw in 10-20 HRs in any given year from Dugo, Story, Yoshi, Duran and maybe even Mayer a couple of years into his career and you should have enough. That would also be a nice, long lineup. They might be a little short if they move on from Dugo and use Rafaela in an OF spot. If he has a noodle bat, that would be a drop in production compared with Dugo.
