I 100 percent get staying away from HS pitchers especially early on so I'm all for that. I wouldn't hate seeing them take a college aged pitcher with a good pedigree somewhere in the first 2-3 rounds. Not that I have any issue with who they've taken early on in the past few drafts though. Overall I think they've been drafting well recently so I guess I'm kinda belly aching about nothing haha. do we think the preference for college pitchers over high school pitchers is simply risk? Or is it that D1 pitchers have more metrics and pitch information to evaluate? Which I guess, inherently, makes it less risky? So I guess I answered my own question? Probably for me it's just recency bias. Ball and groome both fell flat while Houck is a nice ML pitcher. Those as far as I can remember are the last 3 pitchers selected first round by Sox. Pitchers as a whole are seemingly more volatile than hitters so at the end of the day if they want to go hitters early every year there's probably plenty of rationale for it. That being said I'd love a high pedigree arm in the system to follow from the draft up but suppose that goes without saying.

I was suggesting that risk is certainly one aspect, and explains why you don't pour assets into the higher risk category. But the reward is also greater, and you need pitchers, so if the draft is a longshot, then that leaves trades based on your SS supply, the J2 International picks (probably a better low risk but high reward group) or Free Agency.

Keep drafting nothing but hitters, end up with a farm system stacked with more valuable assets than you'd otherwise have and you'll figure it out from there. It's mostly true, but almost nobody ever trades prospects, and when they do there's a large asymmetry in information baked in that means the prospect-receiving team will never offer as much as the prospect-selling team thinks they're worth. If you can't play them all and you can only sell them at a discount, the abstract value of a prospect helps less than they might otherwise.

And yet despite the strategy taken in the draft the last few years, the farm system had about 8 pretty interesting starters in A ball before the break.

I spent no time on this draft. I’m going to make up and look at everything. I’m so pissed the first day I fell asleep . I love our day 1. I saw the picks I dvr it. Wow the little girl stole my heart . The second pick Zanetello . Wow. How can we not root for these young kids. I have a feeling about . He is very mature. He is filling in big time. He just looks like a leader . I don’t know how big but he looks like he can carry a lot. The first rd catcher could of gone 6th. Wow.
I look forward to reading a lot about all of this.
