I have no issue with Houck and Whitlock starting, because I think the org needs to figure out what they have in those guys and whether they can be reliable starting contributors once and for all, but I think it needs acknowledging that 1) This absolutely was not the plan coming into the offseason. All of ownership/the FO's own statements indicated that they wanted and intended to add additional starters, they just failed to execute on that for whatever reason. Pretending that there was nothing, absolutely nothing, that could have been done to upgrade the rotation other than signing Giolito and, I guess, Criswell is just disingenuous. 2) We're left with paper-thin depth in the near-certain event that one or more of our starting five go down with injury at some point, which is incompatible with the stated goal of building a contending team in 2024. Had to cross out my single least favorite word, but otherwise, yeah, don't take my/our word for it: Breslow was very clear that the team needed to add rotation depth, and then he in fact added Giolito, which would have pushed one of Whitlock or Houck to the bullpen. And the team obviously at least engaged on other pitchers, including Lugo, Imanaga, and Montgomery, even during the time when it looked like Giolito would be a healthy starter for them. So unlike many here, he didn't think it was of the utmost importance that both Houck and Whitlock be guaranteed starter roles from opening day.
You can of course argue that Breslow was wrong. But that is the argument you're making - that it's a good thing that Breslow failed to add as much pitching as he wanted because the team is better off with Whitlock and Houck both being forced into starter roles.

He placed his house on the market within the last month. When you add that to all of the other indicators, it reinforces the impression that Boston will be in his rearview mirror.

If Cora is on his way out, who does Breslow hire as manager next offseason?
Gabe Kapler (also consideration as GM, experienced in the dugout and in the front office + seems analytically inclined/Bailey connection) Andrew Bailey (he could pull a Dick Cheney and "help" his friend with the search) David Ross (doesn't seem like Breslow's type, but he's experienced and Theo liked him enough to hire him before, warts and all) Jason Varitek (the warm, fuzzy PR pick, internal perception might depend on how this season goes) Rocco Baldelli (local guy and 2019 MOY would require a maneuver to pry him away from the Twins) Don Kelly (a name that was involved in the interview process before) Luis Urueta (ditto)
I've ordered them in order of likelihood (imo).

Really great AMA with Speier today—sheds some insight on Breslow, what the team is working on organizationally, and the offseason as a whole: https://www.reddit.com/r/redsox/comments/1boo41k/ama_im_alex_speier_a_sports_reporter_for_the/ Some good stuff here, for any who missed it.

What I like about Breslow is everything has been coherent and cohesive in terms of an overall plan, and consistent
He literally said this team is not in a position to sacrifice future wins for… and that means no big long term signings and no prospect trades
We have all of our long term financial flexibility, top prospects, and added some quality prospects and a young 23 year old hitter in Grissom
I think this year will be fun and 2025 will be very promising

He answered my question!- "Do you see Rafael Devers being moved off third base if he has another poor defensive year (this year) after 2024? That's if they trade Yoshida in the 2025 off-season? Seems to me Grissom could easily slide to third base in 2025 with his arm, with Mayer and Story up the middle." Alex- "You are identifying a fascinating can of worms -- and yes, Devers is getting to the point where he'll need a bounceback to prove he can stick at third, since Mayer will reshape what they do in the infield (either SS with Story at 2B or 3B, or 3B or 2B with Story still at SS, among other permutations). Right now, they're viewing Grissom solely at 2B, but it will be interesting to see if he ends up having a more versatile role (maybe some 3B or LF in the mix) either this season or in the future."

A couple of months ago I said I'd be happy with anything as long as the shipped out Sale and didn't sign Montgomery so I'm happy.
