Sucks for Giolito, but we were already slated to finish last in the AL East, just means a better draft pick.

Hendricks, Grissom, Giolito ....this off-season has netted the Sox a very deep IL!

Incredible. For his sake, just get the surgery now.
Did they know of any risks to his elbow when they signed him or did this just completely blindside them?

This makes it LESS likely they sign Montgomery imo. Sell. Use this season to figure out who you're keeping around in the rotation. This just isn't a team worth adding Montgomery to at this point.
Trade Jansen and Martin. Figure out if you're extending Pivetta.

Man, what a gut punch. This not only ruins this season for me, as I’m absolutely positive they won’t sign Montgomery, but there’s a good chance it could ruin next year’s as well. I find it very unlikely that they’ll be willing to spend any money on next years batch of FA starters once Giolito inevitably opts into the $18M option he has. Somehow things only continue to get bleaker for the Red Sox…

I would trade Jansen and Martin too, but eat their salaries to max out their returns. I’d prefer Clevinger to Lorenzen, but they need to sign one. Whitlock and Houck aren’t making it a full season either.

A small bit of silver lining is Giolito will likely be here through 2026. Sox have a $14million club option for '26 if Giolito has less than 140IP in 2025.

Desperate attempt at a glass-half-full take: This year was unlikely to be great anyway, but if Giolito pitched well he would have been gone at the end of the season. Now maybe he gets healthy this year, comes back next year, and contributes to an overall more competitive team next year? Sorry, that's the best I've got - I was already starting to feel like the Sox were being followed by a raincloud after Grissom got hurt

I had them as a high 60s to mid 70s win team before this injury. I know some were a little more bullish, but some of the "if everything breaks right" crowd had the Sox hitting the 90s. The Red Sox aren't going to be 10 games worse without Giolito and if they sign Montgomery, in theory, they should be a better team had they just signed Montgomery instead of Giolito.
Again, I wasn't sold and I think this hurts their odds at acquiring him, but if you had any faith in this team before I don't see how all hope is suddenly lost. He was a low risk, high reward guy to begin with and could have very easily been a 4.80 ERA pitcher.

I wouldn’t be so sure Giolito will be anything other than $19M in dead weight next year. This is a lose-lose for the Red Sox. He was already coming off of two down years. Now throwing surgery in the mix? This could be it for him just as easily as any other outcome

Not much more to say than this hurts. I’ve been really impressed with Giolito’s interviews, seemed like a very easy guy to root for and like a guy who had a solid plan to return to form. Also felt like he and Pivetta would be good role models for the young guys rounding out the rotation. Just sucks all around.
Given that they haven’t announced he needs Tommy John yet, I’m just gonna hope it’s partial enough that he can avoid surgery and get some innings in this season.

If he gets TJS and rehab goes well then there's a good chance this gets exercised, but $14 million is probably going to look pretty close to his market value so the Sox won't be getting a fantastic deal or anything.

I feel like the sox sold their soul for the historic 2018 season... No other way to explain this historical levels of terrible luck (injuries) since The optimism and vibes on where the team was in December 2021 (just as the lockout began and coming off an underdog ALCS run) to where we are now is nuts. Heck, on Giolito alone we've gone from "he's had an 4.90 ERA the last two seasons" to "he'll eat innings" to "maybe Bailey can fix him" to "wow, he looks pretty good!"... to TJ and a body blow to the season as a whole. Damn it.

Hey maybe a Trevor Story internal bracing surgery is on the table.

I'm bullish on Bello but this is a lot of pressure on him to be the ace.

Well that stinks. Can't until May when the rotation is 1/2 Criswell/Walter. Highlights how absurd it was that they didn't sign a Paxton-tier pitcher as well.
