Jose Abreu agreed to be optioned by the Astros so he can work through his struggles. Don't see that too often. At least we are paying our Dalbec just league minimum

The A's closer Mason Miller now has a negative FIP. 28K, 4BB 0HR in 13 innings. 101 average fastball velo. How many guys have ever reached this level of nasty?

That stinks. He just can’t stay healthy. He hasn’t played more than 140 games since his age 24 season. He hasn’t played 135 games since age 26. His career has been very good still but his health issues appear to have robbed us of him really taking aim at any cumulative records.

Yankees did not bother to protect this one from the RUle 5 in an offseason where Jeter Downs was on their 40

Not to speak specifically about the wisdom of not protecting Spence, but Downs was claimed by the Yankees from the Nationals on December 19, about two weeks after the Rule 5 and almost a month after the protection deadline.

Or as we know it, one more pitch than Jordan Montgomery, the scheduled starter.

I felt I was owed a little bit of poetic license when talking smack about the Yankees.

Sure, but every time someone makes a reference to Jeter Downs being a Yankee he goes 2 for 3 with a walk and a homer. You're tempting fate here!

Randy Arozarena is now batting .139 through 116 ABs after another 0'fer.
The Rays team OPS was like 950 in the middle of May last year and since then almost every hitter has been a disaster

The Rays team OPS was like 950 in the middle of May last year and since then almost every hitter has been a disaster They've had a heck of a run with their resources but it is looking like their magic is running out. It seemed like they somehow found productive players at just about every position by scouring under rocks and finding random people. Arozarena has been a disaster and Diaz hasn't been much better. Diaz was their leader in fWAR last year and Arozarena was 3rd. So far they've gotten -.6 from them, hard to field a winning team when two of the batters you were banking on the most so far have turned to pumpkins. Then the whole Franco stuff obviously doesn't help, that could have been the beginning of their downfall so to speak. Of course as I say this they'll probably reel off 10 wins in a row and be right back in it by the end of May. They do have some help on the way in Caminero and Parades is a stud so we'll see.

Losing a 5-6 WAR superstar shortstop - who was 22! - to the Dominican legal system is (strictly from a baseball standpoint) absolutely insane. In most cases before the Rays might lose a player they’ve been able to trade them and get something back (think Pepiot for Glasnow) - but in this case it’s just poof, there goes your best player for nothing.

Buxton pulled up limping from a SB attempt. It’s on his twice surgically repaired knee. I want to see a few healthy years for that man. He’ll gets scans tomorrow before the Red Sox series

The Oakland A's have a winning record (15-14) against non-Red Sox opponents, and are currently 3rd in the AL West.

Checking in on the Blue Jays for no particular reason and I see that Vlad Jr. and Bo Bichette have combined for exactly 0 WAR through the first fifth of the season. That's 0.2 for Vlad and -0.2 for Bichette.
Vlad's trajectory is just crazy. ISOs by year:
2021: .290 2022: .205 2023: .179 2024: .116
What's going on with this guy? He's continued to hit the ball hard; about the only thing I can see is that his solid contact rate has gone down each year (8.9 to 6.8 to 6.1 to 4.3).
Bichette, meanwhile, has just been straight awful. .267 xwOBA. Makes me wonder if there's an injury there.

I choose to believe that born rich fatso Vlad Jr is severely lacking in WIM (want it more) because I prefer to think the worst of our division rivals

Re: the Blue Jays, even the positive stories for them I’m not sure how sustainable they are. Jose Berrios has a sub-2 ERA… but all the under hood numbers aren’t looking so good: baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jose-berrios-621244?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlbJustin Turner has been as reliable as ever, but he’s also 39 and a half - you can’t put carrying this paper-tiger of a team all on his shoulders. If Vladdy, Bichette and Gausman aren’t going to be good I don’t know what they do

AJ Preller is like when you play The Show and you trade all the prospects in franchise mode because you know you’re only going to do one season
