Fatse knows his players and he knows they like swag. Over the winter, he had black and white sweatshirts made for his hitters with “9-on-1” across the front with signature Red Sox lettering. The sleeveless hoodies — “We’ve got some pretty physical guys and a lot of them wanted to have sleeveless, like TO and Jarren,” Story explained about teammates Tyler O’Neill and Jarren Duran — were a hit among the offensive group. Players have worn them around the clubhouse and in pregame drills as a subtle but noticeable reminder of the goal at the plate each day. theathletic.com/5392295/2024/04/05/red-sox-offense-9-on-1-approach/Shocking Tyler O’Neill loves sleeveless hoodies. Shocking.

It might be silly, but motivating guys who've largely achieved the wildest dreams of their youth can't be easy. "I want to feel cool in front of the people I spent the majority of my time with" seems reasonable enough. Or maybe it's the opposite? A group of people who have largely achieved their wildest dreams probably skews heavily toward the type who are easy to motivate. And yeah, in-group status is always a powerful motivator.
Maybe there’s a distinction that can be made between “motivation” and “buy-in.” I would guess that MLB players are highly internally motivated, but that’s not the same thing as getting an entire team aligned and channeling their motivation into a very specific set of parameters. The current coaching staff seems to be going about that in a very smart way, by simplifying to the most crucial factors, and then creating competition within those factors.

Giancarlo Stanton to start the year 25 plate appearances, 13 strikeouts. 3 hits (1 homer) and a BB.
The texts from the Yankee fans in my life don’t suggest a lot of optimism he will turn things around.

The texts from the Yankee fans in my life don’t suggest a lot of optimism he will turn things around. He lost some weight/bulk this Winter with the hope of staying healthier this season. However, he really seems to have lost the ability to hit in recent years. His BA for 2022-23 was a mere .202. He wasn’t exactly Tony Gwynn in his prime, but he used to be a decent hitter. And he looked like a surefire HOFer when he got to NY, but now looks like a long-shot. He still has 3 more seasons on that contract after this one, too. One wonders if he’s still be on the roster at the end of that deal.

We are having record low temps out here in Orange County lately, but the rains have passed and the game should be played with no delays. It has been FREEZING cold here(42 degrees this AM), though, and that’s highly unusual for this time of year in SoCal.

incandenza, I've been thinking the same thing. The ideal time to go out west is at the beginning of the season and right after the AS break, when most of the team will be fresh and travel can be scheduled to be convenient and allow the team to get adjusted to the time difference. Throwing my hat into the ring and agreeing I was stoked that they were opening up the season out here on the west coast for precisely the reasons stated. Travel wise, their schedule should be wayyy more breezy than most for the rest of the season. The Portland Sea Dogs have snow on the field, and Worcester had their first two games canceled by weather, so the first obvious reason to start the season out West is a greater likelihood of actually playing the games. The second reason would be a better travel schedule as the team can arrive a day or two early. The last reason, this year, is the reliance on pitching, defense, and speed as the fog and heavy air in March and April cause the ball not to carry well. I live five miles from the Pacific Ocean and we get fog and mist every evening and morning here this time of year.

Did Cora swap Masa and Casas because of a small season-opening slump? Hope Masa doesn't DP us out of early scoring opportunities.

I wanted to do this but unfortunately the final train departs around 9:30p and I don’t wanna rush outta the game to catch it : / Having a train station at the ballpark then ensuring that it's unusable for game days is the biggest slap in the forehead dumb nonsense I've heard today. Yupppppp — classic SoCal. Blasphemy to have any other reliable form of transportation outside of a car.
