The simple trendline through most of the signed position players (AAV versus FG Depth Charts projected WAR; r^2 = .93) that pegs Machado at $27.2 AAV and Harper at $26.8 has Mookie, if he were a free agent this year, at $40.2.
Mike Trout is $50.0.
The media is seriously guilty of overhyping these two guys as free agents. Their youth has something to do with it, but projections have them as the 11th and 13th best players in baseball next year.

Interesting. This sort of highlights the skewed nature of MLB payrolls. The system is the way it is as a legacy of the reserve clause. It took a long time to get any change introduced into MLB. It's become obvious that more is needed.
These days, younger players are serfs for the first part of their careers, so they hire high powered agents to hype them to the media and ownership in the latter part. That leads to more than a bit of distortion. I don't know that anyone is ready to give Harper $40M/year for 10 years. Their needs to be some realism brought to the negotiating table given the amount of data that's now available.
This looks like a real impasse.
