Bogaerts is still very young. He may continue to improve as a defensive SS. We need a top young SS, not a 3rd baseman or a 2nd baseman and moving him to the OF inherently reduces his value. I do understand that conventional projections are that Bogaerts moves off the position but there has clearly been some recent movement toward letting him stay at SS until he just proves he can't cut it. He is reputed to be an extremely hard worker and he is obviously very athletic. We can keep him in the minors for 3 more years and he still will only be 22 years old! My bet is that he stays at SS until much later in his career. I'm not buying the inevitable projection to move for a guy his size and rawness at the position. I'm betting he continues to improve as a defensive SS because he is athletic, is obviously still very raw at that spot but he still has several years to develop at the position. He is comparable at the position to a guy in low a ball in age and experience. He has time to improve.

Scouts seem to think he won't stick at SS, but, ultimately it's the organization's decision. If they feel as if Bogaerts would be more valuable to the team playing SS (which is obvious), I strongly believe he'll stay at the position unless he is a butcher at the position.

I would not say he is now or ever will be a butcher per se at SS, but the few times I have seen him play, his range wasn't anything to wrote home about and he generally played a bit stiff, more of a waist bender than a natural knee bender. If a corner outfield spot diminishes his inherent value, maybe first base makes the most sense for him?

Pretty sure it doesn't. Other than DH there's no position that diminishes his value more.

Right, that's kind of obvious. The point is that they're saying he won't be good enough at the position to be valuable there. He has the bat to have value at third or right. Dustin Pedroia was once a shortstop - he's still pretty valuable at second, no?

Lets not forget to mention we would also have a first rd pick for Crawford an Lackey if we didnt sign eathier.
I agree Mayos list are 90 percent crap. Just dont like him or agree with just about every time. His list are some of the worst an he is proving it again.
I wouldnt say we have underperformed on the IFA. We got Hanly, Doubrount, Anibal Sanchez for nothing. Boagerts, Vinico, Roman Mendez, Tazwa, Iglesias, Jorge De La Rosa. Most of which came from the old international scouting direcetor. Ya theres more to name who could potentially be good prospects an then good MLB. He found good some diamonds in the ruff an now im scared we wont do that any more with the new guy. I admit he didnt get good depth an it is hard to do that with the IFA an he didnt get to spend big. But now we seem to be getting more of those big name guys an I love it. I am happy with that an want to continue to get more but lets still get those cheaper guys an those diamonds in the ruff.
