Draft day is finally here. After months of speculation and discussion we will find out how the Red Sox use their highest pick in years.

Just a gut feeling, but I somehow think we end up with Braden Shipley.

I would be very happy if we get Shipley.

From SI, here is a historical summary of the #7 pick from the last 20 drafts. This is the year to be bold and go for the highest ceiling player available. Pick: No. 7 MLB: 17 5/10 years: 16/11 All-Stars: 4 players, 9 selections Total bWAR: 166.3 (7.9) Best: Prince Fielder, Clayton Kershaw, Troy Tulowitzki This has been a particularly fruitful pick starting with the Brewers' selection of Prince Fielder in 2002. Fielder was followed by Nick Markakis, Homer Bailey, Tulowitzki, Cy Young award winner Kershaw, a dud in Matt LaPorta, Yonder Alonso, Mike Minor and Matt Harvey. None of those players has reached 30 yet, which means this could prove to be one of the best draft positions in the entire draft in the first two decades of this century. I'm settled, my #1 target is Fraizer. I do think the best case scenario is Stewart and Fraizer are available. If they both I would trust who ever the Sox pick as the better prospect. Shipley is interesting to me, a guy who could touch 97-98, has one of the best change ups in the draft, and has only pitched for 1 year. I wouldn't mind him at all.

Meadows has 50-50 chance to stay in CF, Frazier 10%, Law still ranks Meadows higher for higher longterm upside Sox still like Stanek, but Law thinks Sox will have better choices at 7 (Stewart, Meadows, Frazier) Mentions that they had researched idea of AGonzalez for below slot, but doesn't think that's worth it and hasn't heard much about it lately

Cant wait until tonight. A few random thoughts. I really think there will be one below slot deal that will throw a curve to the top 10. Dominic Smith is really growing on me and I just get the feeling Meadows is last minute smoke screen for us. I think my board would look like 1 Stewart 2 Fraizer 3 Smith (close) 4 Shipley 5 Meadows. Stanek scares me.

Final mock from Callis: 7. BOSTON RED SOX: Boston will take Stewart if Minnesota doesn’t. If he’s gone, the Red Sox likely will take whomever the Indians don’t between Moran and Frazier. I’ve had a hard time pinning down whether Boston prefers Frazier to Meadows. PROJECTED PICK: Clint Frazier. www.baseballamerica.com/draft/mock-draft-4-0-the-final-countdown/

I gotta go with pitching first here. Adam terrified me by associating Frazier with "swing and miss profile", and Moran does not "do it" for me.

Indians - "Frazier gaining steam here" .. that scares me a little bit

These Dominic Smith rumors seem to be gaining steam. It seems to me like MLB teams have him rated much higher than the media scouts do. I won't be surprised if he goes before our pick or if Ben pulls off a shocker and takes him.

It is interesting to read that the Astros have basically kept all of the top prospects in the dark about their preference to gain leverage.

I won't be surprised if he goes before our pick or if Ben pulls off a shocker and takes him. I remember this posted about Smith awhile back: More praise for Dominic Smith. 7 might be high but I like him. insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=640• The high school season has ended for many, but the California playoffs are beginning to heat up, and no one is hotter than Serra High School (Gardena, Calif.) first baseman Dominic Smith. Smith went 2-for-4 in a victory against West Covina High School, and has now reached in 20 of his last 24 plate appearances. “He’s really coming on and he’s doing it at the right time,” an NL scout said. “He’s done a much better job of keeping his weight back the last few weeks and I see a load of potential for average and power at the next level. He’s one of the only guys I’ve given four 60 grades (on the 20-80 scouting scale) and I’m not sure why he’s not getting more top-10 talk.” Well clearly he is now getting some top ten talk.

I run the site NEPatriotsdraft and study the NFL Draft as well as others. And usually rumors that come out in the 24-48 hours leading up to the draft they tend to be more legit.
It's the rumors a week-two weeks prior which are usually smoke screen or posturing.
A cople things to watch tonight that might be gaining steam according to Callis, Gammons, Law
- Twins opting for McGuire
- Frazier to Cleveland?
- Smith in the top 7 picks.

These Dominic Smith rumors... One of the benefits of drafting a first baseman is he's unlikely to have to move off the position unless he's an absolute block of wood. I'd much rather a 1B with a great bat than, say, a 3B with a good bat who's probably destined for LF, or a C who's destined for 1B.

Sickels today: Smith in, Meadows and Moran drop www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/6/6/4401732/mlb-draft-2013-mock-draft-jonathan-gray-mark-appel3) Rockies: Dominic Smith, 1B, California HS: A beamquake strikes Draft World, upsetting the balance of expected reality. Smith agrees to a slightly below-slot deal, freeing up cash for the Rockies later in the draft. 4) Twins: Kohl Stewart, RHP, Texas HS: The Twins think about Bryant as a long-term replacement for Justin Morneau, but in the end can't resist the allure of Stewart's arm. The multiverse tries to right itself. 5) Indians: Kris Bryant, 3B, San Diego: It is hard to see Bryant falling any further than this. 6) Marlins: Braden Shipley, RHP, Nevada: The Marlins reportedly have a long-standing interest in Shipley. 7) Red Sox: Clint Frazier, OF, Georgia HS: The Red Sox are rumored to be looking at a bat, with Frazier and Austin Meadows at the top of the chart. Moran is still available in this universe and might be a compromise pick. 8) Royals: Phil Bickford, RHP, California HS: Although the big-league team is short on hitting and Moran might be attractive on paper, pitching is said to be Kansas City's focus, with Phil Bickford a better long-term option than Ryne Stanek and his hometown connection. 9) Pirates: Reese McGuire, C, Washington HS: McGuire is repeatedly linked to the Twins at 4 or the Pirates at 9. In this universe he ends up in Pittsburgh. 10) Blue Jays: Trey Ball, LHP, Indiana HS: I've been slotting Ball to the Jays for a couple of months now and he still fits here. 11) Mets: Colin Moran, 3B, North Carolina: The Mets are said to want a college bat. Here's a good one. 12) Mariners: J.P. Crawford, SS, California HS: Positional scarcity helps make Crawford's case. 13) Padres: Austin Meadows, OF, Georgia HS: Hard to see him fall further than this. 14) Pirates: D.J. Peterson, 3B, New Mexico: This has been rumored for weeks and is still valid under this scenario. 15) Diamondbacks: Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas: The most logical choice if the Dbacks want a pitcher.
