Those 3 and other high upsiders still on the board would be ideal. This is where there unusually high position at the top of round 3 can help. If because the teams just ahead of them must be budget conscious, since signability didn't factor into their top 6 picks, the Astros, Twins or Marlins have limited financial flexibility, one of these or a couple of other higher upside studs are still there at #81, you have to hope that the Sox will pounce.

Is Denney sign-able at this point or is he going to go JUCO because he feels he should get a better draft position?

If he thought he was a 1st rounder, he's expecting $1.5M or something?
I *think* by now the Red Sox have some idea on their first two picks and how much it'll take to sign, and if they can get them below or at slot, they'll go big at 81, and if it'll take slot, probably make a couple picks to save money in the next few. I don't think Ball or most other top 10 picks will be above slot anymore though, the money just isn't there.

I'd like to see them get Wahl.

If Boston signs their first two picks for at slot, you figure that's nearly $300,000 they can go above slot for the third pick, and up to $1 million total if they pick a senior or two, just based on the 5% overage.

Wahl is signed at Ole Miss, Sandberg at Miss St. The pick has to be Sandberg, if Wahl has visited Ole Miss and seen the women there, it'll take a lot to sign him away to spend the summer in Lowell, MA.

Ah, I just saw colleges and thought it was a committment. I don't know the players... was more just making a comment about the relative merits of the school.

Damn, I really thought they were going to continue the trend of Bradley and Marrero and were going to grab Wilson at 45. I know nothing about the guy they picked and can't really judge his talent level, but reading the various scouting reports he feels like someone we already have two or three of. At least.

I was going to post in the other thread , but it's locked so here's the way I see it so far.
Considering what was left on the board at #7 I think Trey Ball is a superb pick. He was the best Lefty in the draft, a high school two way guy, who should really see improvement when focusing solely on pitching. He should gain velocity as he bulks up and his arm doesn't have many miles. I think his best case scenario is David Price (not Price's road to the majors, just his type of pitcher). At worst he ends up a lefty reliever.
#45 taking Stanky wasn't bad either. He had been scouted quite a bit , so I'm sure the sox knew what they were doing. I think it's better to target somebody with a pick like this then just take whoever is left. Big right handed pitcher 6'4 who's still young (just out of H.S.). Has good velocity, plus potential slider and worked on the change all year.
With #81 I really like Rowdy Tellez, and if the sox think Boldt will sign for the right price he could improve the balance of the draft. I think that the Sox will take Michael O'neil here though.... Not too bad, but I think he's a 4th outfielder. They might also go with Jared King.

Curious to see who the Red Sox target for rounds 3 through 10.
Waking up this morning, still disappointed in the Trey Ball selection. I was hoping for a athletic OF with a power bat.

Well that's exactly what you got.... with the added benefit that he throws hard enough to be considered for the mound.

I am really hoping for a high upside pick with our next two picks. I think Reddy will sign under slot for a mill or so. Ball will sign slot prob. So we could sign some one for over 1 mill here if Teddy goes under slot for 1 mill or so. There will be multiple picks today that are to just save money also.

Complete speculation says Ball gets slot and Stank gets ~$1M. With the 5% overage, that would give the Sox about $500K to reallocate. If last year's draft is any indicator, don't be surprised if they go under slot with this pick and take a sign-ability guy in the fourth. Buttrey was the guy last year. He was the 38th ranked prospect and ended up signing for $1.3M.

They did what they should've last night. A power lefty who has a ton of projectability left in him. I can't complain. As for specifics, none of us know enough about these kids to have real opinions. Pitching, pitching and more pitching is by far the most valuable resource in baseball. Can never have enough of it and need to always be adding it to the system. As prospects they carry way more value and hold the most value over any other prospect type. Yes, power may be rare, but I'd argue it carries less value because when power prospects carry question marks it hurts the trade value more the a pitcher who throws in the mid/high 90s. Organizations know there are more possible roles for that pitcher then a hitter with a hole.
In short, not only is the upside high on both Ball and a bat but Ball has a much lower likelihood of fizzling out to nothing. Hard throwing lefties can usually get some sort of career.

Denny has been dropping down mock drafts for weeks now and I wonder if teams think he can even stick at C. Would his bat play at 1B if needed?

Boston's next two picks will really help to determine how I view this draft for the Red Sox. I like the two pitchers that they picked, but they grabbed a bunch of pitchers last year and not much else.
I really want them to pick one of the high school catchers still on the board. Jon Denney would be ideal, and Chris Okey would be a good choice too, especially in Round 4. Jeremy Martinez could also be a really great value.

To the extent that the Sox are cognizant of spreading prospects pitching v. positions, I suppose it may also portent that they are confident getting Devers (3B) on July 2.

The best players available after the second round last year (according to BA) were:
36: Anthony Alford (3rd round) - $750K 38. Ty Buttrey (4th round) - $1.3M 50. Walker Buehler (14th round) - Did not sign 53. Hunter Virant (11th round) - Did not sign
Compare that to this year where 8 of the top 50 are still available.
