agreed. Meadows at #7 and Wilson at 45. Fine picks based on talent alone, but keep in mind you're spending more money at those top two spots than we likely will (who knows though, maybe Wilson signs for slot), limiting what you would be able to do beyond rounds 3. understood but do we really think we are going to get Stankiewicz way under slot? If we do then maybe I am wrong. But my guess is we end up fairly close to slot on Stanky. We will see.

I'm curious who you would've taken instead? Personally I liked the pick considering Frazier was gone. I was very Happy Moran was gone. Shipley, Smith or Meadows. And I would've taken Wilson at 45.

I guess we won't be seeing any tough sign picks for the Sox from the way they started this day. Carlos Asuage is the 208th ranked player by BA.. he's not a nobody.. he's a legitimate prospect.

I guess we won't be seeing any tough sign picks for the Sox from the way they started this day. Not necessarily.....their strategy is probably to start today by taking their favorite picks that they think have a reasonable chance of signing. Keep in mind they signed 8 out of their 10 picks in rounds 11-20 last year. You might see a couple of tougher signs in that range this year, but more are likely past round 20.

I agree on Wilson but like Ball more than Shipley, Smith or Meadows. I don't know what would happen if we got Ball, Wilson and Denney. At any rate I like our draft so far. I have no complaints considering the CBA ties our hands.

Shipley, Smith or Meadows. ADDED: And I would've taken Wilson at 45. agreed. Meadows at #7 and Wilson at 45. Wilson was looking for mid-1st round money, based on rumors I heard. Easy to say that you want the shiny object but there are some draft realities also. And there's no way they would have taken both Wilson and Meadows.

By all accounts Wilson will be a tough sign foe Seattle. I think if we took him it would have precluded us from taking Denney a round later.

Second guessing the Boston choices with 1% of the information you would need to really be able to compare the players is odd. Two paragraphs of second hand information from some draft blog is better information than reports from half a dozen scouts/crosscheckers? Have yhou ever watched one game that any of these draftees played? Have you sat in their living room and spent two hours interviewing them? Do you have dozens of years of experience in evaluating and projecting baseball talent?
I totally understand saying, "Gee, some of the Internet sites had players ranked in a different order than the Red Sox did. I wonder what the reasons are?" Or, "It will be interesting to see how this plays out because some of the things that I have read about player A or player B made it appear that they would be a better fit for Boston."
But, suggesting that the Red Sox were wrong in picking someone, perhaps because there was little pre-draft buzz about Boston's interest in a player or because a draftee came from a small college program or a cold weather state so that there was less information available about them for some Internet draft mavens to take into consideration in ranking players, puzzles me.

Yeah, remember the risk-reward balance will have to be analyzed for each pick even from 11-50. At each pick, the front office will have to choose between players who are less talented but have a good chance of signing versus players who have early-round grades but are very unlikely to sign. If there's a player that Boston thinks might sign and could be a diamond in the rough, they should take him rather than a player like Tellez who is very much a long shot to sign even if you scrounge together half a million overslot for him.

Jordan Sheffield ? jordan_sheff 2m RED SOX NATION!!!! Encouraging start to the negotiations I would say I hope he has a better personality than his uncle although it would be kind of tough not too. For a player with so much talent how did he manage to wear out his welcome with so many teams?

You have to think it is easier to sign a guy coming off a serious injury than a healthy player coming out of high school.
Puts things in a different perspective
