Jonathan Mayo said Sheffield had Tommy John surgery this season which is why he dropped, don't know how it effects signability..

You have to think it is easier to sign a guy coming off a serious injury than a healthy player coming out of high school. Puts things in a different perspective who are you talking about? Nevermind answered above.

I think Trey Ball is the type of player we all clamored for, He arguably has the highest ceiling of any player that was available at 7. I love the video on this kid. I think he could be an ace in the making and it will be a challenge to our development program to help him come up with three plus pitches. For the strength of the organization as a whole it was probably better adding pitching than someone like Smith or Meadows. Now we need to get Denney signed, bring Devers in and hopefully get a nice showing from Margot next month and this fram system will be looking pretty solid and balanced. Let's add in a lights out showing from Buttrey so we could give some credibility to last year's draft.

Thinking about Trey Ball, and I had a random question about developing pitchers in the NL vs AL. How much do they work on hitting with the pitchers coming through an NL system? I assume they bunt a lot, but do they work at all to develop their hit tool?

Second guessing the Boston choices with 1% of the information you would need to really be able to compare the players is odd. Two paragraphs of second hand information from some draft blog is better information than reports from half a dozen scouts/crosscheckers? Have yhou ever watched one game that any of these draftees played? Have you sat in their living room and spent two hours interviewing them? Do you have dozens of years of experience in evaluating and projecting baseball talent? I totally understand saying, "Gee, some of the Internet sites had players ranked in a different order than the Red Sox did. I wonder what the reasons are?" Or, "It will be interesting to see how this plays out because some of the things that I have read about player A or player B made it appear that they would be a better fit for Boston." But, suggesting that the Red Sox were wrong in picking someone, perhaps because there was little pre-draft buzz about Boston's interest in a player or because a draftee came from a small college program or a cold weather state so that there was less information available about them for some Internet draft mavens to take into consideration in ranking players, puzzles me. ^^ THIS

I never really got the Mike Yastrzemski love. Yeah, it would have been a nice story (which is more than most late-round picks amount to), but nothing I've read paints him as more than an org player type (won't stick in CF and little power).

A three-sport star at Westminster Christian Academy in Louisiana, Williams is committed to Nichols State to play wide receiver. But that hasn’t stopped scouts from watching him pitch this spring. Williams throws his fastball in the upper-80s and has touched the low-90s. Scouts believe there is more velocity in his 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame if he gets more experience and receives better instruction. He also throws a curveball and a changeup, though both are in their nascent stages. It will take a while to develop Williams, but a team that is enticed by his raw athleticism and upside could take on the project. - MLB

Yeah, it would have been a nice story (which is more than most late-round picks amount to), but nothing I've read paints him as more than an org player type (won't stick in CF and little power). It's what you think it is. It's the name. I wish the Sox had gotten Mike Yastrzemski as well. Maybe it's an age thing. If you're twenty or even thirty something odds are you don't remember Yaz playing for the Sox or realize how much of an icon he truly was. Fact of the matter is most of these guys the Sox are now drafting will never make the majors, let alone impact anything, so if the Sox are going to draft some anonymous kid without much of a chance of making it, might as well draft Yaz's grandson and keep it all in the family. Makes some of us older guys smile, even though we know he's no Carl Yastrzemski. Who knows, he might have even had a shot as a backup OF? Understand I'm not advocating drafting him over somebody who has a real chance of amounting to something, but with what's probably left in the draft and left in the budget someone like Jordan Sheffield is probably one of the few guys the Sox are taking a shot on to spend their remaining money.

Any particular reason why Vanegas and Brown haven't been picked yet?

MLB's scouting report: In a group of many solid prospects coming from Puerto Rico, Monge sticks out because of his above-average defense in center field. He has great range to go along with solid arm strength and should be able to stay there long term. At the plate, he has a quick, compact swing and a good feel for hitting, and he could add power down the line. Monge has expressed a willingness to enter pro ball and has not committed to a college. His defense in center along with his signability could allow Monge to be an intriguing option for many teams. Edit: clip: wapc.mlb.com/play/?topic_id=40395496&content_id=27722363

Brown has leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore and Vanegas is probably asking for a lot to leave Stanford.
