I love it , how about xman at 3b. Then Jose at ss and work out WMB at 1b since he's down there anyway why not and a little dh. What a stacked infield next year. If you ask me at the All-Star break deal Drew and Napoli and bring up those other two. I know wishful thinking. Nap is killing the Sox. WMB is the future.
I understand this will not happen I let my imagination run wild sometimes. Instead of making a deal for bullpen help I would promote RDLR and Workman. They both deserve it.

Cecchini, Middlebrooks, and now Xander playing 3rd today ... that's a lot of talent.

I glanced at the sites 2014 projected lineup and that's what they have know. Xander 3B, Iggy at SS and WMBs at 1B. Part of me hates we're missing one of his hot streaks down there but the FO didn't have a choice and it was the only call.

Looks like Middlebrooks gets the player of the day honors. 2 HR's, 8 RBI's and they're only in the 5th. Way to bury the lead. The important news of the day: Xander 1/4 with a walk, no strikeouts.

Todays Box Score Thoughts:
Brandon Jacobs is quietly having a nice hitting stretch bringing his average up to .236. Finally awhile removed from the wrist/hand injury.
Keeping my eye on Henry Ramos as well. Not doing too bad of a job hitting leadoff for Salem but I don't think he's a leadoff type probably more of a 6/7 hitter.
I think Margot could be in Greenville by the end of the year based on talent and performance but the team may not hurry with a 19 year old.
David Wright at it again . . whoops I mean Garin Cecchini at it again. I still can't help but see a player with a game similar to Wright. High average, High OBP, medium pop, enough speed to be a little dangerous on the bases and can hold his own defensively.
Yet another HR by JBJr. I thought he was an 8 to 10 HR type in his prime but maybe he's more of a 14 to 15 HR type player. Interesting to see if he continues to hold his power throughout the Summer.

Cecchini has been a personal favorite since drafted, but due to my rule of not getting excited until they reach AA, I've had to temper my expectations and excitement. Trying to wait out the SSS but he's making it difficult. When do they promote him to Pawtucket?

Cecchini could hit .400 the rest of the way and not see AAA this year. Remember JBJ being ready for MLB? You need AA ABs. That said, he could start in Pawtucket next year, depending on what else shakes out. AAA is reserved for guys who are ready for the bigs if the injury need arises though, so the FO will decide based on the next few months I guess.
I do like the idea of Middlebrooks at 1B, since he certainly has the ability to play 3B (and Xander to SS) to spell Iglesias as needed. Frankly I think his fielding would be wasted there though. Who is a better fielder at 3B right now between WMB and Xander?

Why does everyone think Middlebrooks to 1B is a good idea? If he couldn't hit enough to hold down 3B, why would the Red Sox slot him in at the lowest rung of the defensive spectrum? Remember, league-average 3B are hitting .258/.319/.403 while league-average 1B hit .258/.329/.437. Even if we ignore the possibility of Napoli rebounding from his slump and re-signing, Carp and Nava are far better options at 1B than Middlebrooks, and there are a handful of interesting FA names as well (Paul Konerko, Justin Morneau, Kendrys Morales, Corey Hart). I mean, maybe you teach Middlebrooks 1B to increase his versatility for a bench role, but if he can't crack the starting lineup at 3B, he's definitely not going so at 1B.

I just cannot figure out how a 1b is ever developed. Are they? Or are they only ever converted bats from other positions? They never get drafted.

It's baffling how often I see this suggestion, and not just here either. Even if Will figures it out and hits like you'd reasonably hope he could, he wouldn't likely be much better than average for a 1B. I also wonder how well his defense would really transition; it seems like his biggest defensive asset is his arm, followed by decent range, and if he's got a weakness I think it would be his glove (at least from my totally untrained perception), which I would think is the most important thing for a first baseman's defense. And even if his offense were to play well at 1B, and his defense does translate like you'd think an above average defensive third baseman's would, he's still considerably more valuable as a trade chip.

Just speculating but isn't Denney probably going to start tomorrow? He said he was DHing his first two games and catching Monday, and that they're "easing him in", so would DH tomorrow DH Saturday and catching Monday make sense?

Middlebrooks does not seem overly quick at third and he is not an outfielder. 1B is an option. I don't know whether we have a potentially more powerful bat than WMB. He will get better and hit reasonably well IMO. I don't want to give up our home-grown talent indiscriminately. Bogaerts is probably better suited for 3B, at least long-term, and Iggy has a present iron-clad lock at SS. Wouldn't it be nice to have Cecchini, WMB, Bradley, Bogaerts, Iggy on the same team? Add Webster and RDLR on the pitching side. Low cost potentially impact players all. Now that would be exciting.

What an amazing day for the Red Sox farm system. Some nice pitching and hitting performances throughout. Poor Greenville. We even signed a quarterback for the future!

Am I missing something? It's always most exciting and rewarding to me to have home-grown talent. Add in the relative low cost and that is by far preferable. The Sox would be in good stead to sign high leverage free agents. Now, if I knew absolutely that I could produce a better team by other measure, of course I would do that. But after a period of drought, we finally are on the cusp of delivering from our minor league system in a significant way. Following our minor league drafting and development is a main reason I access this site.

It seems to me if Middlebrooks is hitting enough and he is pushed off of 3B by Bogaerts or Cecchini then I'd rather use that value in a trade and if were converting anyone I'd rather convert Brentz and his power to 1B if he could handle it defensively.

Brentz is a good defensive RF. Maybe not Reddick good, but strong arm and can handle the position. Not a candidate to move to 1B.

On top of that Brentz and Middlebrooks have very similar offensive profiles, so it doesn't make sense to move Brentz because if his power. That is Middlebrooks calling card too.
But I do agree with the general point. I don't love the idea of moving Middlebrooks to 1B. I'm not sure the bat will ever really play there.
