7/7 ML Gameday Thread: Rubby & PawSox look to avoid sweep

With regards to Buxton, great prospect, but tearing up low A and 44 ABs in high A needs to be tempered. He's 14 months younger then Xander but 2 huge steps behind him. Both play premium positions. I get Buxton's defense is far superior, but give me Xander any day over him. Does that mean it'd surprise me to see Buxton have a better career? No, but if I'm choosing I'm taking X today because he's in AAA.

If the concern for Miller is what some are saying, a lisfranc injury. The negative x-ray 'tells' that is not an obvious fracture or dislocation, so I am told. There is a need for other test to detect subtle fracture issues. So we just have to wait.

Buxton is .375/.390/.500 so far in A+, so he's adjusting well too, with spectacular CF defense. Like I said, lots of baseball left to play. I think we all realize Cecchini isn't going to keep up .412/.524/.588 the rest of the way. Chris, would you be surprised to see Cecchini make an appearance in Pawtucket over the last week or 2 of the Milb season? Yes, very. What's the point? (EDIT: Excepting if Pawtucket makes the playoffs and Portland doesn't - then it would be less surprising. But my guess is he'll go to Arizona.) Also, shoutout to Mainesox for the Charlie the Unicorn reference.

And by then Drew would be back so same logjam at 3rd/SS for playing time. Love to see him up for these last 8 games so perhaps he can give them a sense of what the options are re: July 31 (or before). Barring an amazing run through July/Aug, I don't think Drew gets a qualifying offer so the "we need the equivalent of a first round/sandwich round draft choice in a trade for him" has been downgraded to, say, a good reliever - unless of course there's a cataclysmic SS injury to another team in the next 3 weeks, in which case it will be trade Drew before he has the cataclysmic injury. But what is he going to prove in 8 games? Last year he proved he can have SSS success in the majors, but with his approach it always seemed unsustainable. He could have a good week or so and it wouldn't really change anything long term. He could mash or he could struggle and it isn't going to be very predictive of what he'll do the rest of the season and moving forward. I'm done with Snyder so I wouldn't mind a call up, but I wouldn't put much if any stock in whatever he does in that time period. I still want Aramis, the guy always goes off in the second half. I figure Middlebrooks back to Boston is the fastest way to get Cecchini to Pawtucket.

Chris Hatfield, 2 questions for you, How do you see the infield shaking out between Iggy,WMB,Xman? Next years roster. (I will leave out Garin). prediction on our infield for 2014 not including trades.
Number 2 the outfield, just what's on the roster. We have JBJ,Vic,Gomes,Nava,Brentz for 3 postions. Ortiz is signed for dh. Do the Sox carry 4 usually?
These are the 2 that are a little open. I like the extra pitchers the more the merrier.Who takes 1b I don't think Nap coming back. No way. I just not feeling Nava long term.

Off topic but attended the Lowell game tonight and Littrell's FB seems faster than advertised. Seemed to locate his pitches well.
Not much else to report that is positive.

Ramos and Jacobs are keeping up the momentum from June, rescuing horrendous starts. Got to like to see the toolsey guys rolling.

If all three of those guys are in the org next spring, then Bogaerts starts in Triple-A. I can't see them starting the year with Middlebrooks at first base (that is, after all, what you're really asking, isn't it?). You need too much offense out of the 1B position to trust it to Middlebrooks, imo. Outfield: Again, I don't think there's a point to projecting them all being there, because I don't think they will. That said, they're carrying five outfielders right now, so they could certainly fit those five, given that Nava can cover first base. I just don't think they will.

Thanks, did not see that from Speier. It answered my question about Ramos. Noticed that he hit a home run yesterday. I wonder if he has moved ahead of his team mate Keury De la Cruz, who is a year older, and seems to be making progress.

I recall seeing Ramos a few years ago in the GCL and, even then, physically, he looked like a stud. I think that in the game I saw he hit a jack from both sides of the plate and each was a no doubter.

At this point when I see Garin Cecchini 2-4, 2B, I have to check to make sure it's not an old box score. I could see him stealing Red Sox MiLB PoY away from Xander at this point. Almost like Iglesias... you figure he can't keep it up, but he keeps it going a hell of a lot longer than is logical. Also... what sort of players win MiLB POY in general? If Garin stays really hot and hits .350/.450/.500 (unlikely) at AA, could that get him some traction? Gotta think he'd be a candidate along with Sano, Buxton, and Springer maybe, just eyeballing the numbers. Maikel Franco maybe coming up behind them. Awful lot of baseball left to go though. If you were to give out a Player of the Half award, it'd probably be Buxton, who went from a toolsy, top-15 or -20 guy to consensus, not-close top prospect in baseball. Springer's #'s are incredible, aside from a very high K%

Haven't gotten around to starting it and have more questions than anything! Ramos looks like the best prospect at the moment, though.
