Hi everyone,
Baseball Miracles, a non-profit that is a great friend of SoxProspects, is in need of new and gently used baseball gloves for their upcoming trip to Puerto Rico in December. Baseball Miracles' mission is to bring baseball to children and communities around the world who have never played, but who are anxiously wanting to learn. Ex-Red Sox Minor Leaguer Michael McCarthy is heavily involved with the organization, as are many other baseball personnel. If you have any equipment lying around please consider donating it. Also, please check out their website for other ways to support the great work of the organization.
For more information please visit Baseballmiracles.org and follow them on social media (Facebook/Instagram/Twitter).
If you can help, please send gloves or other baseball equipment to: BASEBALL MIRACLES PO BOX # 2 MARLBORO, NY 12542
Any support would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Ian

Ian, Owens had two games at AA with his performance in the first game being really good and the second game being good. As a scout, how does the game in which you saw him (if you saw him in the first game but not the second game or vice versa) impact your opinion/narrative? Is it possible to add your thoughts on that or information you gathered from talking to other scouts who saw both games etc? Good question. It only impacts it in regards to how the player looks scouting wise. What their stat line is at the end of the day has no impact. Catching someone on a "good day" or "bad day" is also why I like to see guys multiple times before saying anything definitive. A one game snapshot doesn't usually tell the whole story. To answer the second part, when I write someone up it is primarily based on what I saw, but if in my discussions with trusted sources, they have seen a player differently, I will try to make a note of that. Also, when you hear something that you didn't see or was different than what you saw, it sticks in the back of your mind and is something to look for the next time you see the player. This is again why it is important to see a player multiple times. Owens is a good example of this. As has been mentioned before in this thread, his velocity was down in his most recent start. I haven't talked to anyone who saw his first start, but I have talked throughout the season with people who saw him in Salem and some of them have seen him with much better velocity, while others have seen him like I did. As a result, I wrote him up a certain way based on what I saw, but noted that if he shows that better fastball etc. more consistently then he could be more.

You guys are in luck. I saw Owens last week in Portland and have written him up for tomorrow's Scouting Scratch column.

No doubt, I love reading these. But how can Ian Cundall call it a scouting scratch when he only covers half of each prospect's performance? Defense still matters. For instance, we all know that XB can hit. Most of us by now have read DiSarcina's explanation of why XB is not ready for a call up. It has to do with his approaches/angles in the field. Yet Ian completely ignored XB's defense, upon which his progress to the next level really depends. If he was a DH, he'd have gotten the call up already. I don't want to seem ungrateful. I was thrilled to learn that XB is maturing at the plate, adjusting to pitchers and pitches within at-bats and within games. But where is the analysis of his approach at 3B? At short? Right now, those are the most pressing issues with regard to XB. The reason there wasn't any mention of Bogaerts defense is I wrote about it in the June 12th edition of the Scouting Scratch when he was with Portland. Since then, nothing has changed, thus there was no need to rehash what I already wrote. Here is a link to that piece Scouting Scratch: Xander Bogaerts and Michael Almanzar in which I mention both the angles he takes and his approach in a detailed breakdown of his defensive ability. Since he has been promoted to Pawtucket I've only seen him play 3B once and in that game he did not have any ground balls hit to him. He did have some trouble with his footwork covering the base on a steal, which I mentioned on the latest edition of the SoxProspects Podcast, but it wasn't something that was a big enough deal that it warranted being mentioned in the piece.

The color coding is probably related to what year they are ie green=college senior, pink=college underclassman and white=high school.
