Horrible bullpen management by Cora in this series. Lost game 1 because he used Sawamura and Perez instead of Whitlock in the 9th when losing by a run. Now with 2 Men on base in the last inning of a do or die game, he brings in Ottavino instead of Whitlock. Whitlock should be good for three innings in game 7. Oh wait No. Nope. This is on the offense 98% View: When your entire lineup is batting under .120 not much Cora can do. We could have had prime Pedro on the Mound one of the last three games and still have lost. Both things are true. The offense being horrendous has been said enough, Cora's bad management in this series hasn't

Crazy idea: The season should end on a Thursday followed by a three game series for the Wild Card with a doubleheader on Saturday (26 players for each team) and the deciding game on Sunday. The Division Series would start on Tuesday
The excitement would still be there as for the #1 WC team you'd need to sweep the doubleheader at home or face elimination in a game in the road. For the #2 WC team you'd need to at least steal one of the games of the doubleheader to decide at home
It would also give a huge advantage to the best team in the league, as they would play a team that is very tired. Imagine the Yankees having to travel to Oakland after a doubleheader and whoever wins then returning to Boston to play on Tuesday. Also, the WC team would have to start their third or fourth starter in Game 1 of the DS.
Finally, all division winners would be able to reset their rotations for the postseason, because of the 4 day rest.
The idea is probably too insane though.

FWIW, Vazquez was taking BP earlier today. Hit a couple of balls over the monster.

I work as an intern (granted that in another country where the law for internships is probably very different from the US) and it has never crossed my mind that playing minor league ball is anything close to an internship.
IMO, if an industry can't pay their workers the minimum wage, it shouldn't even exist.

Cora should have brought in Kimbrel in the 9th to pitch against the middle of the order. I'm glad that Kelly did the job, though.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are PFPs? Pitchers' Fielding Practice. Drill after drill of what you're supposed to do as a pitcher to field your position/where you go in various circumstances (to cover a base or back up a throw) when another player fields the ball. Thank you very much for the clarification.

Before Pedey comes back:
Bogaerts Benintendi Betts JDM Hanley/Moreland Devers Nuñez Vazquez JBJ
After Pedey comes back, there are two scenarios. If Bogaerts is raking, Pedroia hits 7th. If he isn't, then Pedey gets the leadoff spot and Bogaerts slides to 7th in the lineup.

I'm a little late to the party but here we go. My ballot would be the following, in order of HOF worthiness:
1 - Chipper Jones 2 - Jim Thome 3 - Curt Schilling 4 - Mike Mussina 5 - Scott Rolen 6 - Edgar Martinez 7 - Larry Walker 8 - Andruw Jones (borderline case) 9 - Barry Bonds 10 - Roger Clemens
Players with PED connections only enter my ballot if there are spots open after all 'clean' guys are in it. Manny and Sammy Sosa (very borderline case) are also Hall worthy in my book but this time there weren't any spots for them. Maybe next year.
ps: This thread has been an excellent read with many insightful posts and respectful disagreement. Should be held as some kind of standard (HOF of threads?) in this website or any baseball related forum.

I know that scouting reports are not as high in Ohtani's potential with the bat as his potential on the mound, but I'm bullish on him being a very good MLB hitter. His OPS from his last 2 seasons are 1.004 as a 21 year old and 0.942 as a 22 year old, while playing in a league that's probably better than AAA. The Pacific League average OPS in both seasons was 0.706.
If he had been drafted and developed by the Red Sox, he'd be hyped in this forum as the second coming of Ted Williams.

This outcome is most probable. In fact, without doing any outsized calculations, I can confidently say not getting Ohtani this year is, conservatively, 95% probable. Especially considering the now quite significant possiblity he doesn't come to the U.S. at all, which I presume guidas is factoring in. Yeah, I realize that it is very unlikely that Ohtani plays for the Red Sox next year. I listed that scenario first because getting him would be the most desirable outcome and would completely change the rest of the offseason.

To me, the Red Sox should have two different approaches to the offseason, depending on whether they sign Ohtani or not:
1. If Ohtani comes to Boston:
a. Ohtani is going to sign with a club that will give him the opportunity to hit. I’d DH him in all games but the days he is pitching and the following day. In those days, Pedroia would DH.
b. I’d sign Neil Walker to play 2B when Pedey is the DH or is unavailable and platoon with Hanley at 1B. He has played 1B before and would probably play it adequately. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to sign for 2 years and $20 millions.
c. Sign a LHH that hits well RHP and won’t cost much (Adam Lind, Lucas Duda, Mitch Moreland). He would be a valuable pinch hitting option late in games and would also be a factor in the platoon at 1B and cover in case of a Walker or Pedroia injury. Let’s say Duda signs for 1 year and 6 millions, as MLB Trade Rumors projects.
d. The bench would consist of Leon, Hanley, Duda, Brentz and one of Holt, Lin, Marrero and Hernandez. Keep in mind that by having Ohtani as the primary DH, there is one more spot in the bench. It could also be used to carry an 8th reliever, but I believe that carrying an extra bench bat is more valuable.
e. After those moves, the payroll is at $222.5 millions, which means they can add Castillo, have some space for in season moves and still be under the $237M mark.
f. Finally, I would trade Pomeranz for prospects, given that he is going to be a FA after next season. That would also open more payroll space ($9.1M), that could be used to sign a RP or extend the younger players.
2. If Ohtani goes elsewhere:
a. Sign Carlos Santana to play 1B. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to get 3 years and $45M in free agency
b. Sign Neil Walker. He would play 2B when Pedroia is the DH and would be the DH against RHP when Pedroia plays at 2B. Hanley would DH against LHP. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to sign for 2 years and $20 millions.
c. The bench would be Leon, Hanley, Brentz and one of Holt, Lin, Marrero and Hernandez.
d. After those moves, the payroll is at $231.5 millions, still under the $237M mark. If Holt is DFA’d, another 2 millions are off the books.

Is there something wrong with JBJ? He should have hit for Young to leadoff the 8th.

Let's say Castillo is added to the 40-man roster right now and is kept there until the end of the season. For luxury tax considerations, his full AAV would be considered or just the pro-rated amount?

I hope he plays his first game on September 4th! He would be the first player named Rafael to ever play for the Red Sox, according to B-Ref, and he would do it on my birthday. It would be a hell of a birthday for me.

I've actually enjoyed AJP as the color guy. Reasonably knowledgeable, and I think his brand of wiseass translates well to the booth. I've got to agree with that. He even made me laugh a couple of times. FOX was clever to put him in that game, as he had caught Sale and played with some of the Red Sox players as well as having faced Verlander and the Tigers frequently in his career.
