Mike, Chris, Ian, James, Jim, Mike, Will, mods and other contributors -
Congratulations on SP's 20th anniversary. It is a significant accomplishment to have survived and thrived for so long in an environment where media, including sports media, seems to be changing constantly. My fondest recollections from the early days included family trips to Red Sox affiliates in Wilmington DE, Trenton NJ, Sarasota and Ft. Myers FL, Lowell MA, Pawtucket RI and Portland ME as well as other stadia where Red Sox affiliates were playing to see minor leaguers play, to meet other folks with the same interests and to share those experiences on SP. It also helped that SP's development coincided with Boston's championships in 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018, which was exciting both for my Red Sox fandom but also my Red Sox prospect fandom since a number of prospects contributed to that success. SP filled, and continues to fill, an important niche in our everlasting love for the Red Sox. Here's hoping that SP will continue to survive and thrive for the next 20 years. Best to all.

Hot take: If Lovullo goes to ARI, I think it makes it more, not less, likely that Farrell is replaced with a Dombro/Wren guy during this offseason.

Willing to wager that Lovullo is going with him.

It's October. Why would I ever exercise the option before spring training, unless there was a player decision which might depend on it?

I wouldn't assume that there will be a huge bidding war for Encarnacion, especially if teams think he is or soon will be a DH-only guy. Most AL teams are some combination of (a) have good DHs already (Mariners, Indians, Astros, Twins), (b) have incumbent options that they can't move (Tigers, Angels), or (c) don't have the payroll to be major players (Rays, Athletics, Royals). The teams that I see maybe being in the hunt for a DH this offseason are the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, Orioles, Rangers and maybe White Sox. But there will also be a pretty significant list of free agent DHs, including Encarnacion, Bautista, Trumbo, Beltran and others (e.g., Napoli, Alvarez, Moss, etc). If some of those teams choose to go cheap at DH (e.g., if the White Sox and/or Yankees decide to do a longer rebuild), the market for Encarnacion might well be almost reasonable. I would add the Mariners and Astros back to your list, in each case as a 1B option. Personally, I think he's either going back to TOR or coming to BOS.

They can always find a DH at the trade deadline if they need to. They can? Sure. Carlos Beltran will be kicking around for 3-4 more years.

I'm confused. Now all the posters who wanted Farrell fired want him to have his option exercised? And isn't this normally done in ST, not a week after the season ends, especially with someone with past health issues?
It looks like talk radio escaped into this thread.

Dombrowski with an excellent explanation of the manager's role in the press conference. Should be required viewing for everyone who has posted in this thread.

The offseason is here, sadly. Feel free to read your dog-eared version of The Green Fields of the Mind.
Issues for discussion (non-manager division):
1. Who replaces Papi's bat? Encarnacion is the obvious choice, notwithstanding that he is a RHH and will cost a 1st round draft pick (#26). Could also seek a trade for a LHH 1B such as Eric Hosmer. Where does Sam Travis fit in?
2. Who's the starting catcher? Leon, Swihart or CVaz? Presumably Holaday and Hanigan are gone.
3. Who's the third baseman? I assume Moncada will need further seasoning to start the year. That leaves Holt, Panda and Shaw to compete for 3B in spring training, with Panda the heavy (pun intended) favorite and Shaw/Holt filling out the bench.
4. Do we change any starters? It seems clear that Buchholz's option will be picked up. That leaves six starters for five spots (assuming Kelly stays in the bullpen, where he seems to project as a late-inning option). Does Dombrowski re-visit a trade for Sale or Quintana?
5. Who fills out the bullpen? Kimbrel, Kelly, Barnes, Ross and the 6th starter (assuming no injuries/trades) seem like locks. I'll assume Smith is not ready to start the year and Taz/Abad are gone. Hembree is out of options. Does Koji and/or Ziegler return for one more year at short money? Can Robbie Scott make the big club or will he ride the shuttle? Is it worth spending big bucks in the bullpen?
6. Which prospects are likely to be traded to fill out the roster? Does Moncada's awful September free him up in Dombrowski's eyes for a trade? What about Leon/JBJ's awful ALDS? Will Benny's trade value be too high to pass on a potential blockbuster?
No Farrell discussion, please. No trade proposals, either.

KC has a runner on 1st with one out in the bottom of the 9th. CLE leads by one.
EDIT: Runner caught stealing, two outs.
EDIT #2: CLE wins.
If BOS wins, CLE plays tomorrow. If not, see ya Thursday in Cleveland.

Reset for Sunday (assuming SEA comes back to win; a SEA loss would eliminate them): TEX has clinched top seed. BOS has the tiebreaker over CLE for the #2 seed but is 0.5 game back entering Sunday. A BOS win and a CLE loss on Sunday will set BOS as the #2 seed vs. CLE. A CLE win and a BOS loss on Sunday will set CLE as the #2 seed vs. BOS. Otherwise, the seeding will not be finalized until Monday. BAL(@ MFY) and TOR(@ BOS) are tied for the wild card spots and control their playoff destinies. If both win on Sunday, TOR will host BAL on Tuesday in the WC game, with the winner to play TEX in the ALDS. If one or both lose, SEA(vs. OAK) and/or DET(@ ATL) can jump into a potential tiebreaker scenario. 5pm update: BOS losing, CLE tied BAL/TOR winning, DET losing If scores hold, and CLE wins, there will be no CLE-DET game tomorrow and CLE will host BOS in one ALDS, with TOR hosting BAL in the WC game, with the winner to play TEX in the ALDS.

Per Scott Lauber -
Rob Manfred: MLB offered Red Sox a chance to rescind Drew Pomeranz trade. Red Sox declined. At that point, MLB didn't feel comfortable altering terms of a trade between two clubs.

The past page on this thread is just flat out sad. I understand that the gameday threads are for overreactions, but man, come on you guys. I hope someone pulls up this thread during the playoffs and eviscerates those people who posted in the last 12 hours. Embarrassing.
