Looking ahead... after the draft and we move into roster cuts and pre-season injuries, it'll be good to have ample $$$ to pounce on players if they'll fill a need we didn't address during the draft or via a prior trade.

Rooting for Song for a variety of reasons. I'd hope Boston keeps him and we see what he has with another year of training under his belt. For a team (Boston) seemingly hesitant to invest in high-end free agent pitchers and instead focused on "finds" at good value, imagine what a healthy and productive Song could mean to this team. Low salary, and I assume team control for some years, but I don't know about that team control issue.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the player opt-out has NEVER been a good financial deal for the team. If the guy sucks, he'll stick around and you're on the hook for the rest of his contract. If he's good, he'll either sign elsewhere or look to negotiate a new deal with his original team. There may be rare exceptions, but agents and players aren't naive.

I voted for Philly a couple of weeks ago or so. Philly had dumped the coordinators around their head coach. I very good friend of mine is a huge Eagle fan and has said for weeks that there's lot of noise about Bill going there. And that was before Philly's dismissal of their coordinators... and also before we started seeing stories about Bill being in play for a team that hasn't already fired its head coach. Doubtful Bill would want to go to a dumpster fire team. Philly already has a QB and has been team near the top for a few years. I won't be surprised if he lands with the Eagles, especially given what I'm hearing from my Philly friend. Then again, he could decide to chill for a year, make $$$, and check the landscape a year from now...

Hopefully Boston adds more talent before the season starts. As it stands today, I'd guess only slightly above .500. Maybe 83 wins.

An interesting nugget, to me anyway... With the Sale trade to Atlanta, only one Red Sox player remains on the roster from the 2018 World Series championship club. Rafael Devers.

I like this deal. I'm not nearly the stats guy that so many regular posters are. But my two cents: Sale's contract has been an albatross these past few years. We still save $$ on his 2024 contract by paying the $17 million. Frankly, $17 million was the cost to acquire a stud prospect under team control for years. Boston wasn't gonna keep Sale after this year anyway, so getting a talented young player to fill a positional need is a win, to me. Hopefully, more pitching moves are on the horizon.

For anyone wondering about Wander... from today's ESPN - "did not respond to a summons filed in the Dominican Republic to address allegations that he had inappropriate relationships with minors, the agency director said Thursday.
Olga Diná Llaverías said Franco did not show up to the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Children and Adolescents at 11 a.m. -- the time he had been given to appear in Santo Domingo."

Pats did their job. Lets hope Arizona can do theirs. And maybe Carolina...

Lose out and hope Carolina and Arizona can get on winning streaks. I hate that it's come to this, but here we are.

Strange mindset for me, but it's reality. Hoping we lose and our 'competition' wins. A great week so far!

Ohtani's overall value to the Red Sox brand would be huge, as "chaimtime" rightly mentions. The problem I have with that, at least from a competitive standpoint, is that teams are limited in how much they can spend on players without suffering penalties. So, while Ohtani would bring in lots of $$$ to ownership through sales and media exposure in Japan, it would hamper/limit what the Sox could spend elsewhere on their actual team. If Boston signs him, I hope they build in some sort of protection in case he can't pitch. I doubt Ohtani's camp would agree to that, especially when other teams won't insist on that language. If Boston does sign him, it should signal to the rest of baseball that the "old" Boston is back as a player for elite talent. Time will tell...

Tim Wakefield died. I don't know how to start a new thread. Wake was an icon. There's a Create Thread link at the top right of the home page.
RIP, Wake. You deserved better than to go out in a cloud of controversy that was none of your own doing.
Sorry, but I'm confused. I am not seeing a "create new thread" - can you or someone be of more help?

Go with a (healthy?) Story at shortstop until Mayer. As for second base, cobble things together with the names mentioned. Or, sign a guy to a one-year deal... but don't get locked into any deal that would block rising prospects.

I'll be at the Greenville vs WS Dash game in Winston tonight. Looking forward to seeing so many promising prospects! Anthony had quite a game last night.

No easy answers here, I'm afraid. I have to think Bloom operates under the guidelines of ownership... particlarly related to current salary/payroll and future long-term commmitments. Changing GMs won't much matter if ownership's directives don't change. For me, I've said before I didn't see Boston being a serious contender, particularly given all the injuries. It's fool's gold to bring in players when we don't have a good sense of how our injured guys will perform - or even when they'll be fully healthy enough to perform. Boston's rebuilt its farm system to the point where we should be seeing good, young, cost-controlled players coming aboard. I'd like to see Bloom lock up guys like Bello and Casas long-term.

I haven't seen what the Parker contract means in terms of this year's cap hit, but I suspect it frees up some money. Whether that means we're closer on Hopkins or have other objectives, it probably gives NE more $$$ with which to maneuver.

Good thing NE picked up Gonzalez in the draft. At this point, I wouldn't count on Jack Jones ever appearing again in a Patriots uniform.

I wonder, how prevalent is Mayer's "problem" compared to other top prospects? My guess is that most top prospects can hit a fastball, but need time to adjust to breaking balls. Is what he's experiencing out of the norm?

Boston's going nowhere fast this year. Same as last season. So, trade players, eat salary, obtain quality minor leaguers, and still remain under the tax. This "one foot in and one foot out" scenario leads to future mediocrity, especially with ownership showing no stomach for throwing money around like the Mets.

It's sad/pathetic to see what Samuel harbors all these years later.
