1. I think I’ll go with Brooks Brannon. Shows enough defensively that he can stay behind the plate and continues to mash. Starting at #35 and I think he gets into top 20, maybe up to mid-teens.
2. I’m on the Roman Anthony train. Picks up right where he left off. Top 10 at years end.
3. Two I can’t decide between. Sucker for long shot stories. Noah Song and Zach Penrod.

Here we are in 2024 now. Things can and probably will change between now and the start of the season, but let's take a look at this year's bullpen.
Starters aren't completely settled yet even, but going a general consensus route... Giolito Bello Pivetta Acquisition Crawford/Acquisition#2
For the sake of argument, I'm going with one acquisition and Crawford being in the rotation.
Closer Jansen
BP Ace Martin
1 inning/situational Schreiber Bernardino
Guys who can go through the order once Houck Whitlock Winckowski (Crawford if 2nd acquisition)
Out of options. Can he make the big club? vs DFA to AAA or another team takes Mata
Rule 5 vs return to sender Slaten
Others on 40 Jacques Weiss M Castillo Criswell I Campbell Murphy Weissert Kelly Walter W Gonzalez Benitez Olivarez Perales
Non-40 guys Booser German Politi L Guerrero
Still some FA available, Stephenson, Hader, among others who have been mentioned.
Personally, I'd like them to think outside the box. I've seen other people suggest it and I agree- forget the traditional "closer" role. See if you can get something for a subsidized Jansen. The Sox roster as constructed have a bunch of guys who are great one time through the order, but aren't quite consistent enough to be full time starters. Not necessarily "piggy-back"ing per se, but if a starter can go 5 or 6, let Houck/Whitlock/Wink go 50-60 pitches and finish the game. Use Martin as your BP ace who can get you out of a jam. Finally, have a few of your 1 inning or situational guys plug the rest of the holes. It also gives you the benefit that if a starter goes down, you have major league caliber guys ready to fill in who are stretched out enough.
I think the BP could be a strength this year if everyone is used to their strengths. But if everyone is relegated to 1 inn at a time and we have one guy who can only pitch the 9th in certain circumstances, then who knows.

Interesting set of hot takes. I’m in the camp of as long as there’s another move for pitching in the work, I like it. He is already what we were hoping Arroyo would be. He’s not that different than India, who plenty of people had on their wish list. He’s young and has the minor league track record to be even better. He’s not an everyday ss, but nice to have the flexibility that he can cover for a day here or there if needed.
Took a look at braves takes. Few are pissed and wanted him as their starting LF over Kelenic. Others were fine with it since he was blocked in their minds. Think he’ll be a doubles machine at Fenway.
I think there is a wide range of outcomes for this deal. Sale is a wild card- he could get injured in spring training and never pitch or he could give them 120-150 inn of 3.50-4 and look like a steal. Grissom could not progress any more and flame out as is or he could be Pedroia-lite for a number of years.

Like most, I’m surprised but also not surprised. Someone had to take the fall for the past few years. I thought it was more likely going to be Cora. He had pretty hefty expectations coming in- Friedman’s protege, look at what he did in TB with no money- just think of what he can do with a big budget, etc. If everything is true about Mookie and cost cutting when he first got here, that’s kinda unfair too.
Despite that I give him credit. He stuck to his guns. He had a certain price that he would pay and that’s that. Was not going to bid against himself and if someone valued the player more, then he let him go. Now we may not agree with those valuations, but there were some free agents he went after that if Chaim got in a bidding war, we could look like the Mets or Padres. He’ll probably have some good years with a small market team where his strategy works better. I also don’t fault him for players that just didn’t want to come to Boston (unless the reports are true that he was difficult to work with).
Best of luck to him. He leaves with not too much in the way of bad contracts, some good young players and a farm system with some talent. This year was strange- we saw how good they could be but they could really only sustain it for a hot few weeks before the ASB.
My hope is for someone internal who knows what Boston is like or at least someone from a big market.

A little earlier than expected, but here is the injury that gets him on the IL to start the season. I thought arm, but I guess that was too predictable so the back gets the job done.
Why would Song camp file a grievance? He gets major league min which is still way better than minor league salary. He will potentially get his service clock started. He gets access to major league facility and trainers. This is a win for him.
Could the Sox file a grievance? Maybe, but it’s legit (albeit expected) injury. It’s probably against the spirit of the rules, but not actually breaking any.

More of a lurker than a poster, but this is an interesting situation.
I’m surprised how many people are so certain he comes back. I do agree he is either with the Phillies or the Sox at the end of the year. Nearly everyone else had a chance in Rule 5 and passed, so I doubt there’s any trade or anything. But I do think the chance he stays with Phils is higher than we think.
Too many “coincidences” in such a short period for me to believe there isn’t a bigger plan.
-DD was there when we drafted him in 2019 knowing he had the military commitment. He obviously believed even then that this time would come and he’d be able to bounce back. He’s taken him twice now in the same situation. -We know DD’s style. He’s the anti-Bloom in that if there’s someone he wants, the price doesn’t matter. -I think DD knew his waiver would go through. I don’t know if he has a contact somewhere in the military or mlb or mlbpa or something. Pure speculation on my part, but I don’t buy this series of events as chance.
So with all that, he’s certainly got a plan to keep him. I think you kind of make his case for him. Of course he can’t overcome 3 years not pitching in 1 month. Pitchers have gone on the IL for less. My bet would be 60 day IL on opening day for “dead arm”. They say - look he was throwing mid to upper 90s and now he’s only low 90s. Then he gets a good 2-4 weeks “rehab” with some game action. By then there’s probably a hole in the bullpen to stash him. Get him a few innings of mop-up maybe. Whenever they need his spot again, oops blister problems because you know his callouses have broken down in 3 years. Maybe shut him down early because you know, 3 years right? Get a full off season. Start 2024 in AAA and be up and down or in a perfect world be a contributor. Starting his clock this year doesn’t matter with how hold he is. If it all works out you have his prime years and worry about things later when he’s arb at 30/31.
If at any point during his “rehab” it becomes clear the velocity or the command aren’t there anymore, then he comes back to the Sox and that’s that.
Is it gaming the system or phantom injuries? Maybe, but I don’t think anyone could prove it. How often do we see someone in A ball going straight to the majors after not pitching for 3 years? There’s no precedent.

It's a good framework- both teams dealing from a position of surplus. Would take another piece from Sox to get it done- likely a Ranaudo/Workman type prospect (i.e 10-15ish).
I think Iglesias for Adams straight up would be fair for both (not that I advocate for it, just pointing it out)

C- Lavarnway 1B- Berkman- 1 yr 4-5 mil with incentives for games played 2B- Pedroia 3B- Middlebrooks SS- Iglesias LF- Ross- would like a 2 yr, but think he will get longer offers on the open market so we probably overpay 3/24 CF- Ellsbury RF- Hunter- takes a relative discount to play with Ortiz 2/15 with mutual option DH- Ortiz
B- Kalish B- Torrealba- 1yr 2-3 mil B- De Jesus B- Sands
SP- Lester SP- Buccholz SP- Haren (2/24) SP- Doubront SP- Lackey
RP- Bailey RP- Melancon RP- Morales RP- Bard RP- Miller RP- Hill RP- Breslow
40 man: Removed Matsuzaka, Saltalamacchia (traded for Low/High A lottery pick), Aceves (not satisfied with the role he's best at which is the rubber arm middle reliever- traded for low minors depth), Sweeney, Padilla, Atchinson (re-signed to MiL deal), Cook, Nava (resigned to MiL deal), Podsednick, Loney, Beato, Carpenter After 25 man additions, 40 man is at 34. Add Wilson, Webster, Vazquez, Fields, Olmstead
Leaving 1 spot open to play with if need be.
C- Sell high on Salty for a lottery pick minor leaguer and bring in a solid defensive C like Torrealba. 1B- I think Berkman could be a steal (price vs production). Might not be ready for opening day leaving Gomez vs Sands battle for playing time until Berkman is ready. SS- Time to find out if Iglesias is Rey Ordonez or Ozzie Smith. Let him work with the ML coaching staff. We know he can field well enough, which gives him some leeway, but time for him to sink or swim. OF- I like Torii Hunter as a nice OF placeholder for a couple years. Good clubhouse presence/leader for a young-ish team and is still capable of putting up some decent numbers. Ross I think is going to be a hot commodity this off-season and we will have to over-pay by a year to keep him. Ellsbury I'd like to keep for now and look into signing long term for a fair price. If Boras is being unreasonable, then he's a trade chip at the deadline with JBJ on the horizon. SP- Lester and Buc bounce back to form like they were when Farrell was here before. Haren convinced to sign early in free agency before the outrageous contracts for other starters of his ilk are signed. Doubront slots in and no takers for Lackey and his contract so he gets the 5th slot by default. Depth is the LA kids: De La Rosa and Webster, and whatever MiL free agent depth we sign RP- surprisingly LH heavy at the major league level with a lot of RH depth at the minor league level
Batting order: Ellsbury, Pedroia, Berkman, Ortiz, Hunter, Ross, Lavarnway, Middlebrooks, Iglesias with slots 3 and 5-8 interchangeable based on who is hot
