My understanding is the Angelos family is only selling 40% of the team at this time. The remainder will be sold once Peter Angelos passes away due to the large tax the Angelos family would owe if they sell the entirety while he remains living.
Guess it may be another year or two until they take full control then? Or will Rubenstein have full control once approved despite only owning a minority position?

I understand the angst fans are feeling when we watch star studded names land on other teams. The idea of adding an Ohtani or a Yamamoto definitely gets my adrenaline flowing. I just think those two players in particular landed on the team they were always going to end up with so I have an easier time accepting those deals as non-misses by the Boston front office. In the end most of the bigger named free agents have signed with NL teams and ultimately have little effect on whether Boston makes the playoffs this season. Let’s look at where we stand in the AL right now.
AL MLB Free Agent Signings with Team
C Mitch Garver - Seattle C Victor Caratini - Houston C Austin Hedges - Cleveland C Martin Maldanado - Chicago WS
SS Paul DeJong - Chicago WS SS Garrett Hampson - Kansas City
CF Kevin Kiermaier - Toronto RF Hunter Renfroe - Kansas City
SP Michael Wacha - Kansas City SP Seth Lugo - Kansas City SP Tyler Mahle - Texas SP Jack Flaherty - Detroit SP Kenta Maeda - Detroit SP Ben Lively - Cleveland SP Erick Fedde - Chicago WS
RP Craig Kimbrel - Baltimore RP Chris Stratton - Kansas City RP Luis Garcia - LA Angels RP Andrew Chafin - Detroit RP Will Smith - Kansas City RP Shelby Miller - Detroit RP Trevor Gott - Oakland RP Oswaldo Bido - Oakland RP Chris Devenski - Tampa Bay RP Adam Cimber - LA Angels RP Cooper Criswell - Boston RP Kirby Yates - Texas
Tell me where are the signings that have swayed the balance of power or lessened Boston’s playoff chances? The majority of moves have been in a very bad AL Central division. At this point Boston still has an opportunity to have an impactful free agency. The biggest moves have occurred via the trade market to this point.
AL Related Trades
C Max Stassi - LA Angels Subtraction
1B Evan White - LA Angels Addition
IF David Fletcher - LA Angels Subtraction
3B Eugenio Suarez - Seattle Subtraction
OF Juan Soto - Yankees Addition OF Alex Verdugo - Yankees Addition / Boston Subtraction OF Trent Grisham - Yankees Addition OF Tyler O’Neill - Boston Addition OF Manuel Margot - Tampa Subtraction OF Jonny DeLuca - Tampa Addition OF Mark Canha - Detroit Addition
SP Tyler Glasnow - Tampa Subtraction SP Ryan Pepiot - Tampa Addition SP Richard Fitts - Boston Addition SP Michael Soroka - Chicago WS Addition
RP Greg Weissert - Boston Addition RP Aaron Bummer - Chicago WS Subtraction
The main takeaway here is the Yankees do appear to have improved their team the most which is the most directly impactful off season development to this point. If Breslow can improve the team defense and the overall team pitching through a few key acquisitions Boston is a better ball club who will score an above average number of runs. There is reason to believe offensive improvement should occur on a team that has multiple young players, a SS who returned mid-year from significant injury, a Japanese player who is entering his second year of a new league with an offseason to prepare and make adjustments to American baseball and more depth on the precipice of the minor leagues.
I’ll stand with those who are taking a patient approach to this offseason. I don’t think we can expect to find all the solutions in one offseason which is why I had no problem at the time keeping Bloom one more season. However I do think Breslow is going to be a very good leader and decision maker at the very least and there will be improvement in the wins column. It’s not as easy as it used to be in an AL East that no longer has a struggling Toronto or Baltimore team. Wins are harder to come by and the margins are smaller.

Sox to meet with YY per Feinsand. So if they’re last, do they get to know the other teams’ bids? Will Breslow’s nerd factor win the day? Who else will be there? Henry? Bailey? Pedro? Sale? Papi? If they get to the interview I have to imagine they have the inside track to sign him. "What's your best offer?" "We'll top that by 30 million. Take it or leave it". Both the Blue Jays and Dodgers will have a meeting after the Red Sox. He will not make a decision until his meetings are done. My wonder is if the Dodgers’ meeting being scheduled last is telling of anything? Is he collecting offers to take to the Dodgers so Yamamoto can maximize his contract and the Dodgers know the mark to avoid an overpay? Will he give teams a chance to match or beat whatever LA throws at him? I still consider LA the favorites with the NYY second favorite. Breslow will need to have a very strong presentation and an even stronger first offer to land him. I expect a very quick transition to Montgomery if Yamamoto signs elsewhere and the contract will be on the high side of estimates with the remaining teams bidding on him. Lugo is no longer an option signing with the Royals so Imanaga becomes the premium second choice followed by a trade to secure an arm. We will know how Breslow operates soon enough.

I don’t think Abreu is that much of a drop off from Verdugo. I like the freeing up $10M and continuing to build on the farm + adding what looks to be a pretty solid depth RP. Everyone is going to hate this but this is a Chaim-esque move. The real question now is does Craig follow this up with something big to strike the perfect balance of Chaim-esque moves & Dombrowski-esque moves… My initial thought was this doesn’t make the 2023/2024 Red Sox better which one would think was a mandate given to Breslow. I quickly transitioned to a similar sentiment. Is Abreu really much of a drop off as a full time Verdugo replacement? There’s also still an upside to Abreu that Verdugo lacks. So whether the return improves the MLB roster this season or not may not matter. Interested how Breslow uses the extra cap savings? Also how does Verdugo innings ultimately get replaced? Does it mean more Yoshida in the OF or does the team add an additional OF or utility bat to share the load? Interested to see the follow up moves. Also doesn’t appear these additions will be a big factor this year on the 40 man so still allows some flexibility from that perspective. Fitts has a solid track record as a potential back end starter and Judice is an upside relief arm play. Building out the depth from a pitching perspective is what we expected to see from Breslow .

Again, if he is returned, he is a regular old minor leaguer again. Same as, say, AJ Politi is. That's the simplest way I can explain it. They can add him to the 40. They can release him. They can assign him to Worcester or Greenville or whatever. This is starting to remind me of conversations I’ve had with my young children.

This makes a great deal of sense for the Orioles. Rental with lower acquisition cost. Fits there MO.

LH plays a good 2B. And free if you take any money. Sounds like a Chaim move If the Sox trade for Kolten, would two Wongs make a right? Let’s hope!! Nevermind dfa.

If I recall a few announcements on deals don’t come through until a few minutes after the deadline so just be patient. Not saying it will be Boston but a few things take time to clear officially.

Surprised to see the Orioles just standing pat. I figured they would be more aggressive. They were supposedly in the mix for Verlander, too. Jud Fabian for Paxton Jud Fabian may just quit baseball. Don’t think he likes us much.

I really don’t expect much today. Other than depth to the rotation or selling on Duval there’s really not much that makes sense to do now unless you’re ready to go ahead and trade some real prospects for a young and/or top end controllable starter. There are too many teams still in the hunt for the playoffs and not enough sellers which is why MLB should move the deadline back to mid August. Seems this offseason is a better time to do business. Trade Verdugo this winter, know if your getting Yamamoto, consolidate your prospects before the rule 5 draft and add the pieces you need.
This team has a shot and I’m happy with that. They are close to reaching the year after year consistency they are trying to achieve. I’m not rushing that. Next year is my target. We are seeing Duran and Casas take a step forward. Rafaela is one step closer. There is depth to our prospect pool to make a significant trade to add to our rotation. Story should be healthy. There is money to spend. I’m not going to be stress over any non-moves I’m just going to enjoy the fact we have a chance. I just don’t see many needle moving moves to make unless its that top end starter.

One thing to consider is Baltimore’s presence on the trade market. They clearly could use a starter to upgrade for the playoffs and players like Verlander and ERod make sense for them. They also have a great deal of prospect capital to “outbid” other clubs and drive up asking prices from selling teams.

Bichette left with a knee injury tonight. Have to see the seriousness here and how that may affect the Jays and their trade deadline plans.

Mets get barely ranked pitcher Justin Jarvis
So all these moves are Cohen clearing the books for a run at Ohtani and maybe Yamamoto in the off season?

I look at this as Lopez has one more year of control as an arb eligible player and Floro will be a free agent who Miami likely wasn’t going to resign. Maybe Minnesota gets the better player but Miami gets value in control and maybe they get him back to form.

Thinking Zanetello is going to be more like $2.8 million. But like Ian & Chris said on the podcast, wouldn't e surprised if Teel came in at $4 million, wouldn't be surprised if it was $4.5 million. Antonio Anderson could be $1m, could be $1.5m or more. Duffy is probably in the $400k to $500k range. Best guess is that Campbell is slot and Reimer is under slot, but those are still guesses without any actual info behind them. Those ranges leave some variability for what happens elsewhere. This seems logical for Zanetello. Nationals signed Morales for 2.6 mil at pick 40. One would conjecture that is the number they were willing to give Nazzan as well. Clearly Boston went past it.

Huge shout out to Kutter today. When your effectively best pitcher has a bad start this is exactly what you want your next days starter to do. Enough cannot be said for him shutting down the Cubs today and saving the pen.
